Steinberg faces tough sell on alternative to API
By John Fensterwald - Educated Guess

Gov. Jerry Brown has warned lawmakers that his veto pen will flow freely over the next three weeks. Among bills on the threatened list is potentially the most far-reaching K-12 education legislation before him – a bill that would significantly shift the state’s accountability system away from its concentration on standardized tests. SB 547 is also a priority of it author, Senate President pro Tem Darrell Steinberg.

Acknowledging that the bill may be in trouble, Steinberg said Friday that Brown “has expressed some doubts” about it, while not precluding the possibility that he might sign the bill, in several discussions they have had.

Brown, too, has expressed a dislike of the reliance on standardized tests by the state

The New York Times Magazine's Education Issue: A Treasure Trove of Big Ideas

There were so many interesting ideas crammed into the New York Times Magazine's annual education issue this week that I hardly know where to start.

I knew it was going to be a busy day of reading when the paper's front-page centerpiece was about a high school student with autism preparing for life in an adult world, without the safety net of his educational programs. In this remarkable story, reporter Amy Harmon demonstrates what can happen when writers have the access, the resources and the time to really examine a complicated issue.

Harmon effectively personalized the debate over intensive interventions for children with autism by letting us meet the multitalented, and multi-challenged, young artist Justin Canha. The online multimedia package, with both

New Ed Deform Propaganda Machine Launches

A new propaganda machine presenting itself as "covering all facets of American Education Reform" has been launched today. Choice Media, a clever name indeed, will try to disguise itself to ignorant reporters and corporate media hacks as a "source" for information on ed reform. Who's behind this operation? It's Bob Bowdon and his gang of cronies that brought the film The Cartel, a vicious attack on teacher unions and public education -- blatant propaganda film for the privatizers and voucher supporters.

Who's behind The Cartel, right wing zealots with lots of money.

Dan was elected in 2007 as the first Democratic State Senator from his district in memory. He generally takes a pro-teacher position on issues.

Politely remind Senator Kotowski of our views: We have always paid our share while the state has not. Our pension was a promise made, a covenant (as my pal Mark likes to say). It is guaranteed in our state’s constitution. We receive no social security benefits.

NYC Educator: Is Half a Story Better than None?

NYC Educator: Is Half a Story Better than None?:

Is Half a Story Better than None?

I'm fascinated by this article in NY Mag, and the more I think about it, the more I change my mind why that is. At first blush, I thought it did a good job of encapsulating both sides of class size. But on closer examination, it kind of paints class-size advocates as fanatics, while offering little or nothing in the way of why we believe as we do. On the other hand, it portrays the other side fairly well--reasonable class sizes cost too much, and union is bad.

I've taught classes of 15, 25, and 35, and I can tell you there's a world of difference in what you can accomplish. Folks like Bloomberg, Klein and Obama place their kids in private schools with class sizes below 15, but have no problem advocating larger class sizes for our children. In fact, those who administrate schools ought to be required to patronize them,

According to a previous post on the Seattle Education blog, Parents Across America, Seattle: Part of Protest at Apple Store:

Steve Jobs with Apple has gotten on the ed reform bandwagon and is offering free iPads to Teach for America recruits but of course none to real teachers who have teaching experience, degrees in education and have devoted their lives to their school communities. Nope, this is for the TFA, Inc. recruits with five weeks of training to teach to the test and nothing more. I guess they need some sort of way to track all of those test scores.

SignOn.org Beta:

Senators - VOTE NO on H.R. 2218 - Empowering Parents through Quality Charter Schools Act

By Susan DuFresne (Contact)

To be delivered to: The United States Senate

Dear Senators:

The recent passage of H.R. 2218, the Empowering Parents Through the Quality Charter Schools Act by the House of Representatives is equally troubling. The nation’s teachers are not alone in their condemnation of this potential federal mandate to implement Charter Schools in every state.

The Association of School Administrators has also raised concerns that H.R.2218 will harm the commitment to properly fund public schools by siphoning money through the voucher system to private charter schools falsely labeled as “Public Charters”.

While some effective charter schools exist, significant fraud and abuse of the public trust has occurred across the nation among charter schools and their operators. We are witnessing a re-segregating of our nation’s schools in the areas of:

1. Race
2. Class
3. Ability
4. Sexual Orientation
5. Language

We are equally concerned that the interest of corporations and wealthy individuals has corrupted education policy in a way which will irreparably change the focus of education from one of success, learning, and accomplishment for children; to one designed merely for profit by corporations.

We the undersigned feel that a unique opportunity exists for you to reaffirm your commitment to education for all of America's children by VOTING NO – against H.R. 2218.

Your NAY VOTE will be a clear signal that you are not taking the side of corporate money and Wall Street hedge funders. It will be a firm gesture that indicates your genuine concern for the nation's children, teachers and schools.

Sincerely,

As students, parents, teachers, administrators, and community members who are concerned about the re-segregation of public schools through the promotion of Charter Schools, we oppose H.R. 2218 - Empowering Parents through Quality Charter Schools Act .

We demand that you, as a Senator of the United States of America VOTE NO on H.R. 2218 - Empowering Parents through Quality Charter Schools Act to protect the civil rights of ALL public school children in America.

GOP, Tea Party Influence Permeates Local Charter School

An original post for K12NN by LiberalMama (@liberalmama on Twitter).

Earlier this year, the city council in my community voted to close a heavily-used library branch. While the city was indeed dealing with a budget shortfall, the branch seemed a bargain with operational costs of around $200,000 per year. The city had $34 million in reserves and had recently sold an asset for $230,000. In addition, a group of private citizens raised half a year’s budget and would donate it to the library on the condition the branch be kept open a minimum of four years. However, the Republican-dominated council wasn’t interested in any of these solutions and insisted they had no other choice but to close the library in order to balance the budget (sound familiar?). Turns out they’d already been showing the city-owned property to a potential renter – a local charter school looking to expand.

As a regular patron of the library branch and a skeptic of the barely-regulated charter school system, I was alarmed when I learned of this. And as the parent of a preschooler who would be entering the educational system in the next few years, I’d been reading up on the so-called school “reform” movement. The more I learned, the

And Justice For All [Troy Davis Must Be Freed]

Wayne Hicks of Electronic Village sent me this, and I have to agree: we must do everything we can to ensure they stop the execution of Troy Grant. Along with other prisoners wrongly convicted, Troy Davis is one of hundreds (if not thousands) of men and women who were thrown into jail under suspect circumstances. We must eliminate this prison industrial complex, and it starts with one. Thank you for helping us in this manner.

Dear kinfolk,

In 1991, Troy Davis was convicted of murdering a white police officer. Though there’s major evidence that Davis didn’t commit the crime, Georgia just scheduled his execution. There’s still a chance of stopping this — but only if we speak up now.

The fact is, no physical evidence connected Davis to the murder. Seven of the original nine witnesses have recanted, with many saying their testimony was a result of law enforcement pressure. Of the remaining
