The Innovative Educator: School is Not School. A Place Where The Community, Not The School, Provides Learning.

The Innovative Educator: School is Not School. A Place Where The Community, Not The School, Provides Learning.:

School is Not School. A Place Where The Community, Not The School, Provides Learning.

I recently shared three radical ideas to transform education without school. In it, I shared Linda Dobson’s timeless article, When the School Doors Close: A Midsummer Night’s Dream where she outlines the transformation that would occur if schools ceased to exist and instead we engaged in community-centered learning. Rather than compulsory, age-based facilities, with community learning people choose to attend and learn about topics of deep personal passion and interest. There would be many options available to individuals of any age. The community takes ownership and responsibility of the learning and well-being of others. As my wise friend Jeff Pulver recently said, “The only difference between a dream and reality is making it happen.”

There is a community that is doing just that. I learned about this community from Arif Hidayat. Although we aren’t the same age, live on opposite ends of the earth, and don’t speak the same language we are connected by our passion to provide children with learning opportunities that best fit their needs. Through the wonders of Google

School day debate is getting ugly
If it weren't a propaganda war already, the debate over a longer school day has now turned nasty, with both sides accusing each other of exerting pressure to sway teachers.

The battle is so fierce that union leaders at some schools have complained to the district that Chicago Teachers Union officials have made unannounced visits to their homes at night to persuade them to vote against adding 90 minutes of instruction time. Other union delegates have accused their principals of intimidating teachers with threats that schools will be closed and staffing positions cut unless teachers approve the measure, securing as

Interview Of The Month — Kevin D. Washburn

As regular readers know, each month I interview people in the education world about whom I want to learn more. You can see read those past interviews here.

Today, I’m publishing October’s “Interview Of The Month” a few days early. Kevin D. Washburn is a researcher, author, and teacher particularly focusing on neuroscience and learning. He is the Director of Clerestory Learning (you can subscribe to their free newsletter here). He’s also a blogger andauthor.

Can you tell us what Clerestory Learning is and how you got involved in education?

I discovered my love for teaching while in high school. We had the option of serving as aides in elementary classrooms during our free periods. I spent most of these times in a kindergarten classroom, and I knew almost immediately that I loved it. My first day there, a student squeezed his plugged glue bottle so hard that it burst

My Best Posts On The Basics Of Small Groups In The Classroom

In yesterday’s post, Teens, Their Brains, & Working In Groups, I mentioned that I would be posting a “The Best…” list today sharing a few very practical and simple ideas on how to work effectively with small groups in the classroom.

This “The Best…” list is a bit different from my lengthy The Best Sites For Cooperative Learning Ideaspost. That is a much more involved list, while this post is more focused on the everyday basics of just doing a simple small group activity.

Here are my choices for My Best Posts On The Basics Of Small Groups In The Classroom:

Sen. Sanders gets the facts right on poverty; the fed's solution will make it worse.

Stephen Krashen

Senator Bernie Sanders reminds us that "… the United States has both the highest overall poverty rate and the highest childhood poverty rate of any major industrialized country on earth. This comes at a time when the U.S. also has the most unequal distribution of wealth and income of any major country on earth with the top 1 percent earning more than the bottom 50 percent." (See his full essay below)

Stating the facts on poverty will not impress this administration. They think

Christie Vilsack on jobs: how about apprenticeships?

Christie Vilsack spent 8 years as First Lady of Iowa while her husband Tom, now Secretary of Agriculture, was Governor. A native of Iowa, she and Tom moved back to the state after he finished law school at the request of her father (Tom was a foundling in Pittsburgh before they met at Hamilton College). She has moved to Ames - site of Iowa State - to run in the newly drawn 4th Congressional District against the obnoxious Steve King. The district is winnable - only about half of it is in King's current district.

I have written about Christie's candidacy before in this brief piece about her outstanding fundraising in the 3rd quarter. And I will continue to write about the campaign, because Tom and Christie are personal friends. Consider that my disclosure.

One concern Christie wants to address in her campaign is how to keep Iowa's young people in Iowa. What can

Questions To Ask When Reading Research and Blogs on School Reform and Classroom Practice (Paul Thomas)

Paul Thomas is a veteran high school English teacher and now academic. He is also a blogger. This particular post I liked because of the sensible questions he poses when readers inspect research studies, policy articles, and blogs that too often mix fact with opinion in unseemly ways.

I want to offer some guidelines for navigating the education debate based on my own experience as an educator for nearly three decades (almost two decades as a high school teacher and another decade in higher education/teacher education) and my extensive work as a commentator in print and on-line publications.

When you confront claims about education, and the inevitable counter-claims, what should you be looking for?

Are the claims and counter-claims framed within the perspective of the person making them? As a critical

Recess Is Making a Comeback in Schools

As more Chicago public schools cash in on Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s longer-day financial incentives by adding 90 minutes to their school day, the previous votes by a dozen schools to add about a half hour to the day by bringing back recess are going unnoticed.

Restoring recess is part of a broader health push by parents, advocacy groups and some city officials to bring more exercise and better nutrition to both schoolchildren and preschoolers.

Beginning in November, the city’s Department of Public Health will require children who attend preschool or day care centers in Chicago to spend less time in front of television or computer screens — 60 minutes or less — and more time, at least an hour a day, participating in physical activity. At snack or meal time, milk cannot have a fat

Moving from Hierarchy to a Circle of Equals

When people ask me, “What do you do?” or “What kind of work do you do?”, they generally are asking me what kind of job I do to make a living. And particularly because I am a white male person of some economic and educational privilege (with a head full of gray hair), they often presume that that job is a fairly high-powered one, and a major part of how I define myself. My job is fairly high-powered, I am a “business process consultant” for Kaiser Permanente, specifically the Kaiser Foundation Health Plan, which is a not for profit health insurance company. But nowadays, that is not how I answer the question of what I do or even what my “work” is.

Though I am a great advocate for what Kaiser is doing as a “health maintenance organization”, modeling what I believe to be the best approach to health care in the United States, my work for them is at most my “day job”, and how I pay our family’s bills. Increasingly, I answer the question by talking about my “life’s work” instead,
