    The same charitable foundation that funneled $405,000 in controversial anonymous donations to support the buyout of departed Philadelphia schools superintendent Arlene Ackerman also gave the District $150,000 to support Ackerman’s arrival.

    Over $10,000 of that money, which was used to create a “CEO’s Transition Fund” to cover expenses related to Ackerman’s transition team, went directly to Ackerman herself.

    I’m sharing information from the Educated Guess forum (run by the reform-minded Silicon Valley Education Foundation). State standardized testing has been imposed on second-graders here in California for quite a few years – in the ’90s, standardized testing began at third grade. California state Sen. Loni Hancock (D-Berkeley) has sponsored a bill that would eliminate standardized testing for second-graders.

    Ken Davis comments on my earlier post about the discussion on his CAN TV Chicago Newsroom program:

    Hoping a clarification might be in order.

    The topic at that moment was press strategy and “issue management” by Mayor Emanuel’s message people.

    We did call it “brilliant”, a word that’s perhaps a little inflated, but the brilliance referred only to the strategy, not to the policy. I hope no one believes that we think asking teachers to work 90 extra minutes for half the minimum wage is “brilliant”. That wasn’t our intent.

    Subject: Education Nation

    Dear Mr. Capus and Mr. Williams: Thank you for dedicating substantial attention to the issue of public education, and for scheduling several days of programming this fall to this critical issue, as you did last fall, under the name of “Education Nation.”

    However, we were very concerned that last year’s “Education Nation” contained a paucity of parent viewpoints, and we fear that this critical omission will reoccur. As far as we know, not a single public school parent participated in any of the numerous panels that NBC and MSNBC assembled last fall.

    Public school parents are the primary stakeholders of our public school system, with the most at stake in the success or failure of our children’s schools. Our voices and viewpoints are crucial to a balanced discussion of the issues. We believe that at least one
