      DETROIT - A supposed nonprofit, non-partisan group established by Michelle Rhee, the former chancellor of the Washington, D.C., school system who became known for her anti-union schemes, has virtually written the slew of anti-teacher bills moving through the GOP-run Michigan legislature, an outside investigator reports.

      In a case of “if it walks like a duck, talks like a duck, then it is a duck,” so to speak, Laura Clawson, a senior writer at Daily Kos, uncovered the working document from Rhee’s group, Students First. Wilson posted her article and a link to the group’s document on her blog.

      The revelation came just as the GOP-run Michigan legislature was moving the package of education bills towards an expected signature by GOP Gov. Rick Snyder, and just after the administrator of the majority-minority

      School district officials throughout the Sacramento region are trying to avoid a chaotic first day of school, where potentially thousands of students could be barred from campuses for not having a whooping cough booster shot.

      A new law requiring middle and high school students to receive the vaccine went into effect Friday. Students at public and private schools will not be allowed on campuses until shot records verifying the booster are turned in to their schools. The law does not affect students

      • SCHOOL VACCINE REQUIREMENTS
        Polio: 4 doses are typically required for children entering kindergarten

        Diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis: The DTaP and Tdap vaccines protect against diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis. Five doses of DTaP are usually needed for children entering kindergarten (4-6 years). Starting with the 2011 school year, every student entering the 7th-12th grades are required to get the Tdap booster before starting school.

        Measles, mumps and rubella (MMR): Two doses of MMR are usually needed for children entering kindergarten.

        Hepatitis B: Three doses are required for children entering kindergarten.

        Varicella (chickenpox): One dose is usually required for children entering kindergarten, but two doses are recommended.

      President Lyndon B. Johnson signed into law Public Law 88-352, 78 Stat. 241, commonly known at the 1964 Civil Rights Act.

      His predecessor, the assassinated John F. Kennedy, had called for such a law in June of the previous year. He did so in the aftermath of many Civil Rights actions, the latest of which was the Birmingham campaign then just concluded, which had included the Children's March and King's Letter from Birmingham Jail.

      The original proposal was bottled up in the House after it had been passed out of Judiciary and sent to Rules, chaired by segregationist Howard Smith of Virginia.

      After Kennedy's assassination, Johnson called for passage of the bill as the best way of honoring, yet an attempted discharge petition did not get sufficient votes until the Members returned in 1964, those especially in the North having heard from their constituents on the issue.

      ISTE 2011 has just completed and once again it people leave with a variety of experiences. I don't know the official number but over the past few years it remains one of the largest educational conferences in the world. A conference, that like many others has evolved over the years and organizers seek each year to improve and increase value for all.

      The intent is to offer enough variety and content that everyone can have a great learning event customized just for them. There are sessions, workshops, student showcases, social gatherings, exhibit halls, and more than enough choice for people to find meet their needs and interests. It is very unlikely than any 2 people would leave the event having seen the same things.

      The only real unifying events are the keynotes. These represent a singular experience for attendees that insure

      Emotional, Behavioral Issues Affect Many Kids in Foster Care

      Identifying such problems may lead to improved care for these children, researchers suggest.

      Behavioral and emotional problems are common in children who live in long-term foster care, according to new research from the University of New Hampshire.

      “Better identifying and assisting children with, or at risk of developing such problems upon entry to foster care and throughout their out-of-home placement, may alleviate their needs and troubles and provide mechanisms for supporting them as they get older,” Wendy Walsh, research associate at the Carsey Institute at the UNH and a colleague wrote in the report.

      The authors looked at a nationally representative sample of children placed in out-of-home care between July 1998 and February 1999. After four years, 43 percent of the children were still in out-of-home care, including 22

      Comprehensive immigration reform is not coming any time soon, says Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.). But that doesn’t mean President Barack Obama cannot use his discretionary power to end deportations of young people, he says.
