Mayors group fights back against recall elections

WASHINGTON — Alarmed by an apparent increase of angry voters looking to boot their mayors out of office, the organization that represents the elected officials is going on the offensive.

The U.S. Conference of Mayors is fighting back against a spike in recall elections with a documentary, "Recall Fever," and a public awareness initiative that aims to arm targeted mayors with more information.

"We have laws in place to combat corruption and malfeasance when a local elected official commits a wrongdoing, but it's become too easy to launch a recall campaign, and it's doing a lot of damage," conference director Tom Cochran says in the documentary.

Ballotpedia, a nonprofit organization that tracks recall elections, identified 57 mayors who faced recall attempts last year, up from 23 in 2009. Fifteen of the 57 mayors either resigned or lost their offices. This year, 15 mayors already have faced recall elections, from Portland, Ore., to Miami-Dade County, Fla.

With nearly 80 members, the Congressional Progressive Caucus [CPC] is insisting on a role in the growing budget debate in Washington. Their proposed “people’s budget” is a major counter to the Tea Party’s reckless insanity and the drift of centrist Democrats and Republicans. Items in the “people’s budget” have popular support in polls. The progressive proposal is the first to link the fight for closing corporate tax loopholes and saving Social Security, Medicaid and Medicare with the “need to responsibly end the wars abroad and limit future military excursions that obligate tax dollars and the lives of young men and women with little direct benefit to the United States.”

The bill also would set property tax restrictions on the new, resulting districts, as well as the already-standing high school districts.

Because of the way these sneaky way these shell bills work, the thing could be passed out of the Senate before

That's how this post at NYC Public School Parents blog left me. Nice as it is to read stuff Bill Gates doesn't veto, when you read things like this, you know exactly what journalists are not doing. Why should Leonie Haimson be finding the outrageous contradictions of the Tweedies while tabloid editorial writers, and even some reporters, write ridiculous echoes of billionaire Mike Bloomberg's utterly invalid notions about education?


Can you believe people get paid for this, many times our salaries, and yet the public is like a demented Queen of Hearts calling for the heads of teachers? Newly annointed Chancellor Walcott, though much more articulate and less of an embarrassment than socialite Cathie Black, spouts the same discredited

No Waiver for Walcott

Just saw that NY State is meeting to consider whether or not Deputy Mayor Dennis Walcott will get a waiver to be chancellor. If they've learned anything from the debacle of Cathie Black, or the abject failure of Joel Klein, they will insist Bloomberg select an educator.

However, look for Steiner, having set the bar low enough for socialite Cathie Black, to show no integrity whatsoever and do whatever Mayor4Life Bloomberg golly goshdarn feels like.
