Retired teacher Glen Brown writes that there will be a legislative forum of the West Lake Shore Unit of the IRTA (Illinois Retire Teacher Association).

March 28 at 10:00 a.m., WLSU will be holding a legislative forum. Three legislators have agreed to attend—Kimberly Lightford, Ron Sandack, and Jim Durkin. The moderator will be Andrew Bodewes, the part-time contractual lobbyist for IRTA and the lobbyist for TRS. It is important that we present a strong and united front even though these three legislators may not be yours. They will take back to Springfield an impression of our concern with regard to the loss of our pensions. If we do not have a healthy turnout, they may assume that we have rolled over and accepted the loss of what we have earned. Come early to write your question on 3 x 5 cards that will be provided. Try to make your question personal—indicating what the loss of your pension will mean to you. We

As a wave of anti-union bills are introduced across the country in the wake of Wall Street financial crisis, many analysts are picking up on the theory that award-winning journalist and author Naomi Klein first argued in her 2007 best-selling book, The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism. In the book, she reveals how those in power use times of crisis to push through undemocratic and extreme free market economic policies. “The Wisconsin protests are an incredible example of how to resist the shock doctrine,” Klein says.

March 9 (Bloomberg) -- Americans reject Republican efforts to curb bargaining rights of unions whose power they say is dwarfed by corporations, a Bloomberg National Poll finds. As battles rage between state workers and Republican governors in Wisconsin and Ohio, 63 percent don’t think states should be able to break their promises to retirees, and respondents split over whether governors aim to balance their budgets or weaken unions that back Democratic foes, according to the poll conducted March 4-7. Americans reject Republican efforts to curb bargaining rights of unions whose power they say is dwarfed by corporations, a Bloomberg National Poll finds.

As battles rage between state workers and Republican governors in Wisconsin and Ohio, 63 percent don’t think states should be able to break their promises to retirees, and respondents split over whether governors aim to balance their budgets or weaken unions that back Democratic foes, according to the poll conducted March 4-7.

The poll shows that political challenges to government workers are failing to draw broad support from a public more concerned about unemployment than government deficits. Respondents are divided over whether public employees should sacrifice to

It's Not About School Achievement, and It's Not Even About the Budget

We know now, even those among us who have been too busy working to notice, that for the past 30 years the real agenda by big money has been about privatizing public institutions, advancing fundamentalist ideology to control behavior, and snuffing out the public space in favor of a corporate state.

All the hype about bad schools and greedy teachers and militant gays and evil Muslims has masked the poison on the tip of spear aimed at the heart of American democracy. It has always been, as Grover Norquist has crowed for so long, about weakening government enough so that it can dragged into the bathtub and drowned.

As Rachel Maddow documents in the clip below (please watch both sides of the break), what is going on now is the fabrication of a crisis through the magnification of a problem that was created by the same big money that now wants to use the effects of that
