Public Advocate Bill De Blasio has said in a letter to schools chancellor Cathie Black that the city should avoid teacher layoffs by nixing raises for computer consultants.

- The CCSS/tests/curriculum initiatives are untested and unproved. There are no tangible, measurable results anywhere in this country, no evidence to support allegations of their efficacy. Here's an artist's rendering, so to speak, of how Michelle Rhee worked when she was chancellor of D.C. schools. It's one of those videos that may make you laugh and cry as it reminds you of how Rhee dealt with teachers when she ran the D.C. public school system for 3 1/2 years. (She resigned last October after her patron, Mayor Adrian Fenty, lost a Democratic primary.) The video highlights a number of Rheeisms, including her penchant for saying that data is king and that collaboration among teachers is overrated. It also refers to the 2007 Time magazine cover in which she is shown holding a broom, a symbol of her take-no-prisoners style.

On Thursday March 3, the district presented and passed a “worst-case scenario” budget. It is a devastating budget, and the cuts are enormous. Here are some of the major points from it:

  • Class-sizes increases
    • 29 to 1 in primary grades
    • 34 to 1 in intermediate elementary
    • 36 to 1 in middle school
    • 40 to 1 in high school
  • Reduction of counselors (14.6)
  • Elimination of Adult Education

This will lead to 355.6 RIFs or layoffs of certificated staff (this includes the counselor figure above).

I met Alessandro Portelli late in the afternoon in his small office at the University of Rome, up a winding stone staircase from the courtyard and down the narrow hallways through knots of students awaiting classes, lounging on wooden benches and sharing hugs, notes, news of the day. He was finishing an interview with a reporter, and I sat nearby. Sandro Portelli has a round, animated face, twinkling dark eyes and bushy eye-brows, half-glasses perched on his nose. He laughs easily, with a quick boyish smile that makes him look suddenly half his age.

Portelli is professor of American Literature in the Department of Language and Literature in the School of the Humanities, a center of important innovative scholarship and intellectual courage for many years, but clearly occupying no exalted space—if real estate is any indicator— in the larger scheme of things here. He’s best known in the states for The Death of Luigi Trastulli which marked a critical turn in oral history, a turn toward
