| The United Neighborhood Organization charter school network is hiring 25 more teachers from the national nonprofit Teach for America. But that's not sitting well with the Chicago Teachers Union. Earlier this year, the Chicago Board of Education OKed a contract that would allow the district to hire up to 200 teachers from Teach for America. Chicago Teachers Union President Karen Lewis railed against that contract. She says those positions should be filled with recently laid-off CTU teachers. |

More than two decades after leaving Mexico, Maria Valdez was working long hours most nights as a cook and still didn't speak English. So last year Valdez, a single mother, signed up for English classes offered for free through the Irving school district. Her 10-year-old son often helps her. "I want him to be proud of me," she said. "I don't want to depend on anyone. I need English."
As the number of children of immigrants attending Texas schools increases, school districts are increasingly taking up the role of educating their parents.

Boy, I'm shocked and upset. Not really sure how this happened, but one reason I love disqus is that it sends comments to my email box and I reply to the comment and it approves the comment and the posts my response. It makes conversation easy!

Lots of acronyms, no vision guiding K-12 schools

The iconic Helen Keller once famously stated, “The most pathetic person in the world is someone who has sight, but has no vision.” Today we are awash with political leaders who can’t see past their own focus groups. With respect to solving our education crisis, politicians and policy experts call for all sorts of accountability measures and rating metrics. But no one is asking the really big question: “What is our mission?”
Aren’t we supposed to begin with the end in mind? The main problem quite simply is that we have no vision, no guiding blueprint for education. We are completely in the dark compared with Keller, a suffragist and social activist.
