In the Absence of COVID Safety Plans, Teachers Are Resigning and Retiring Early

In the Absence of COVID Safety Plans, Teachers Are Resigning and Retiring Early

This should have been Cheryl Dubberly’s 40th year as a music teacher, but in August 2020, she resigned from her position with the Duval County Board of Education in Jacksonville, Florida.

“It was dreadful to think about continuing,” Dubberly told Truthout. “I would not have been able to stay safe because I was responsible for teaching music to the entire school — 500 to 600 kids.” The job, she says, required her to go from classroom to classroom even though the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warned that singing with others can spread COVID-19.

“The job was not worth my life,” she says.

Like Dubberly, Christine Vehar, also a music teacher, left her position in the metro Atlanta area this fall. She had taught for just three and a half years. “When the schools closed in March, I had a great remote teaching experience,” she says. “The students were very engaged and despite some initial disorganization, it worked well, and I ended up loving teaching from home.” But when Vehar’s district decided to move to a hybrid schedule in October — holding in-person classes from 7:15 am to 2:15 pm four days a week, with Wednesdays as a remote teaching and learning day — she resigned.

The reason was fear of catching and spreading the virus.

“My mom is 63, and she lives with me,” Vehar told Truthout. “She is a three-time cancer survivor and an amputee with a compromised immune system, so there was absolutely no way for me to give her the care she deserves and continue to teach in-person.”

fall 2020 survey conducted by the National Education Association (NEA) confirms that neither Dubberly nor Vehar are unusual. “Teachers with less than 10 years in are leaving the profession,” NEA President Becky Pringle told Truthout. “And 40 percent of mid-range teachers — CONTINUE READING: In the Absence of COVID Safety Plans, Teachers Are Resigning and Retiring Early

State Senator Dave Lawson Wants Smyrna Superintendent Patrik Williams To Resign

State Senator Dave Lawson is calling for Smyrna Superintendent Patrik Williams to resign. Lawson reached out to the Smyrna Education Association, the Smyrna School District Board of Education, and Delaware Secretary of Education Dr. Susan Bunting asking for their help in getting Williams to resign. He will reportedly be speaking to the Delaware State Education Association to make the same request to them.

The heart of the issue appears to be a combination of things. Last summer Williams found himself in a mess due to Tweets he put out calling for retaliation against Trump supporters. Earlier last fall he apologized during a board meeting for his comments. In addition, some in the Smyrna community are upset about curriculum material the district began using this school year. They are saying the parent company of the textbooks is run or supported by Black Lives Matter.

I will provide more details on this as they come in what will CONTINUE READING: State Senator Dave Lawson Wants Smyrna Superintendent Patrik Williams To Resign | Exceptional Delaware

An open letter to Betsy DeVos on resignation: You’re too late
Ms. Devos actively participated in building a political movement and agenda that promotes and feeds on race baiting, hate speech and racism

Dear Ms. Devos,

Your resignation is much too late. There is no redemption, absent serious penance, for those who have stood by while Donald Trump wreaked what can only be described as havoc on this country, and in many cases, the world.

Trump’s refusal to accept the very clear results of the November election is not an eye-opening event. Instead, that refusal is a part of a long history of denying facts and building campaigns based on delusions. Have you forgotten how he fervently led the Birther movement and refused to accept the presidency of Barack Obama?

Anyone, including you, associated with him has known for a long time that the Trump brand is one rooted in denialism and lies.

You did not take this role to do good. It is our claim that you took this role to dismantle one of the sacred institutions of American public life, our neighborhood public schools. Yet you failed miserably at that task.

Ms. Devos, your resignation is a performance. One that is no doubt tied to an interest in being able to tell a story of how you rejected Trumpism. The truth, however, is that Trumpisim need not only be rejected, but it must also be uprooted. And leaving an administration with less than 14 days left on the clock is an insufficient and cowardly act.  CONTINUE READING: An open letter to Betsy DeVos on resignation: You're too late - TheGrio : TheGrio
