An unusual Saturday morning

since it has been more than a week since I last saw my students - spring break began a week ago Friday.
Yet I have not been totally out of touch from them - some have emailed me, as did several former students, in one case who had just heard that I was retiring.
And today I begin to refocus on the forthcoming week.  Officially it begins at 8 AM on Monday, although I will not get to my classroom until sometime after 10, missing at least my first period, if not more.  That's because at 9 AM I have an appointment to officially sign my retirement papers.
Some thoughts about that anon.
For my AP classes we have a review and then an exam on our last unit, then one more brief unit, then we begin the process of preparing for the AP exam.  One task today is to put together the review materials I want them to have and be able to use.
For my regular classes, we continue to go through additional material to help them understand their government.  But the weather is warm, many of them are tired of school, there is no high stakes exam that they face, so the

Due to the wide-spread interest in ALEC based on the responses from yesterday’s post, I am going back through the archives and bringing up some of the “best” of ALEC which seems to bring out some of the worst in our legislators.
By the way, Kraft just dropped ALEC, see Kraft Foods Joins Coca-Cola and Pepsi in Leaving Corporate Front Group ALEC. Now it’s time for our legislators to do the same.
In a previous post titled ALEC Exposed in Wisconsin I wrote:
Wisconsin Representative Mark Pocan  explains in a brilliant speech how ALEC is working to eliminate public education in the state of Wisconsin specifically in a bill regarding vouchers and special education funding that’s right out of the ALEC playbook almost word for word.

"Bully" Hits Sacramento Friday

Following the successful New York/L.A. premiere of “Bully” distributor Harvey Weinstein and filmmaker Lee Hirsch will open the compelling documentary in cities across the U.S. April 13, 2012. Last week the heavy-hitting documentary opened in five theaters and made an average of $23,000 per-theater in a single night.
Here in Sacramento “Bully” will premiere at the Tower Theater for invited guests Tuesday, April 10 then open for a limited run beginning Friday, April 13th.
During the 2009-2010 school year, director Hirsch and his crew followed five families affected by youth bullying by their peers, including two who’s children committed suicide after persistent and intense mental and physical bullying.
“This is a film that should be mandatory for every junior and senior high student to see,” explained Benancio Garza, twenty-year old board member and youth leader for Equality Action NOW, a Sacramento grassroots civil rights organization. “Peer abuse is much more prevalent in our schools then anyone really knows. That is why I believe along with our youth, every single parent, teacher and administrator in Sacramento school districts

MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - The superintendent of Memphis City Schools says money is going to be tough to find for schools Memphis and Shelby County. He's concerned after the state allowed 17 new charter schools for Memphis.

The money for education follows the students, and Dr. Kriner Cash says the ruling will mean city schools will take an $87 million hit.

Charter schools are already here, and more are coming. 17 more can open once they get their money. The state treasurer
