Obama administration brings Hispanic Community Action Summit to L.A.

Federal Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and other public officials helped convene one-day White House Hispanic Community Action Summit in Los Angeles on Thursday.

After Salazar and the other officials offered opening remarks, nearly 500 people picked one of 14 breakout sessions on topics that ranged from education and nutrition to veterans issues. The topic at table one was “Building Communication among Latino Organizations.” Civil rights leader Dolores Huerta was one of the first to comment about the topic. “The Latino caucus in Sacramento, we do not have any champions for education in the caucus, who knew that?” She said.

Santa Monica College board to hold emergency public meeting Friday

The Santa Monica College Board of Trustees will hold an emergency public meeting at 10:30 a.m. Friday to discuss California Community Colleges Chancellor Jack Scott's request that the college put on hold its plan to offer a new tier of higher-cost courses this summer.

Scott called Santa Monica College President Chui L. Tsang Wednesday to make the request after students were pepper sprayed by campus police at a Board of Trustees meeting the night prior while protesting the plan.

It seems that with the tragedy of the shooting of an innocent young man in Florida, the dominoes have started to fall for ALEC.
As described very clearly on The ED Show by Van Jones, ALEC  pushes a right-wing pro big-money agenda. As many of us have been aware of for a while now, their reach has gone as far as our educational system where they have templates that legislators can use to simply plug in the appropriate words and voila! ed reform in a nice package, corporate style. For additional information on how ALEC has affected our school districts around the country, see ALEC Exposed.
This morning I was reading gubernatorial candidate Inslee’s proposals regarding education in the state of Washington and went from concerned to horrified. His words were right out of the ed-reform playbook particularly

Is there really a point to advocating both standardization and choice?

"Let me be clear that this post isn’t about favoring or slamming either vouchers or the common core, but rather pointing out that favoring both is entirely inconsistent, unless there’s some weird, warped agenda behind it all. This post IS about slamming the two, when used in combination. It just doesn’t make sense.  Let’s throw into this mix other policies promoting standardization of the operations of traditional public schools like forcing those schools to make personnel decisions based largely on student assessment data.

"Collectively what we have here is a massive effort on the one hand, to require traditional public school districts to adopt a common curriculum and ultimately to adopt common assessments for evaluating student success on that curriculum and then force those districts to evaluate, retain and/or dismiss their teachers based on student

One pattern of failure in education reform is that political leadership and the public focus attention and resources on solutions while rarely asking what problems we are addressing or how those solutions address identified problems. The advocacy of charter schools is a perfect example of that flawed approach to improving our schools.


Let’s start with a clarification: The overwhelming problems contributing to poor school quality in South Carolina are pockets of poverty across our state and school policies and practices that mirror and increase social inequities for children once they enter many schools.


Children who live under the weight of poverty attend buildings in disrepair, sit in classrooms with inexperienced and unqualified or underqualified teachers and suffer through endless scripted instruction designed to raise their test scores. Citizens of a democracy share the responsibility for eradicating both the out-of-school and the in-school failures often reflected
