Angered over recently-approved school closing plans, Rainbow/PUSH Coalition officials said Friday they hope to convince the U.S. Department of Justice to investigate resource inequities within Chicago Public Schools, including a policy that “starves’’ struggling schools of repair dollars.

Comments by CPS Chief Administrative Officer Tim Cawley that CPS will not put construction dollars into schools that appear headed for closure in five or 10 years “just makes the case’’ of how unfairly CPS resources are divided. PUSH’s Janette Wilson said.

Saving Kansas City Schools Means Rescuing A City

The entire public school system in Kansas City, Mo., has flunked.

The state board of education revoked its accreditation on Jan. 1. The Kansas City public schools met just three of the 14 standards set by the board for basic proficiency. They received failing grades for attendance, graduation rates plus math and reading and writing scores.

There have been decades of mismanagement, declining enrollment and revolving-door superintendents. Now, there's a struggle for the future of the schools that may also be a battle for Kansas City itself.

Bryant Terry has a sane attitude toward food that I agree with and it’s a good interview. I agree with him that

I don’t think any one diet is perfect for any one of us. I understand the benefits of the vegan life, but I’m not the guy who would say everyone should be vegan. I think each person should embrace a diet for a healthy well-being. What one person might need versus another is dependent on so many different things: bodily constitutions, geographic locations, what our ancestors ate, what season it is. I also encourage people to think about the way they want animals and the environment to be treated. Then, choose a diet based on all those things, rather than choosing the title or the label.

Being mostly-vegan works for me. I do not care if others eat meat but if they ask, I will tell what I’ve learned and what I avoid. I don’t mind cheese, except sometimes. Dairy products and I do not get along so I live quite well without them. I like the focus on vegetables, fruits and proteins other than meat and milk and have felt

This is the thing he let out of the bottle with Race to the Top. It's the bureaucratic expression of America's worst impulses. And, as has been pointed out over and over, you'll notice that none of the private schools where the elites send their kids are doing anything like this, including the elite private school where Rahm Emanuel sends his own children.

It's not the teaching. I've spent a third of my career in private schools: the teaching runs the same range as it does everywhere else. There are experienced people and new people. There are naturally gifted teachers and those who work at it. As with lawyers and physicians, some are better than others.


It's the decisions made by policy-makers that are destroying public education. What we need is regularly
