    iSchool students taking part in a Model United Nations class that the IDEA tour visited

    Ammerah Saidi, a program coordinator with Detroit Future Schools, meandered in and out of classrooms in the iSchool one morning last week. She had her pick of classes to observe – classes such as “Sixteen,” a course designed around the question of what it means to be 16 in New York City, and Cartography, where students creatively mapped their hearts and fictional worlds.

    Saidi was one of nearly 30 educators, advocates, and consultants from across the country and world taking part

    Wendy Kopp made a mistake with her list of “The World’s 7 Most Powerful Educators”— and I’m not referring to the fact that she actually names eight people. The Teach for America founder and leader should have included herself (given the broad definition of “educator” that she uses) because only someone pretty powerful could have persuaded Forbes to publish such a misleading list on its Web site.

    MMAC Proposes New MPS Takeover Plan

    The Milwaukee Metropolitan Association of Commerce (MMAC) is proposing another plan to takeover Milwaukee Public Schools. Their new scheme is to create two school districts, one for high performing schools to serve 20,000 students and the second to serve low-performing schools. With this proposal 16% of Milwaukee’s children will attend “high performing” schools and MPS will be responsible for educating low performance in a “turnaround district” run by a new school board appointed by the governor, mayor or state superintendent of education.

    This old tune, under a new name, is class warfare against the majority of Milwaukee’s poor and working class kids. Instead of teaching every child to be college ready, whether they chose college or not, Tim Sullivan, speaking for the MMAC, has another plan. He wants to bring back a “dual-enrollment vocational model” for high school students. They would be tracked for job skills to be “job ready” when they leave high school.

    My response to CNN article. Would you stay at a job for five years for a 50 thousand dollar bonus?

    Well, let’s see…

    I have been a Florida teacher for over 20 years,

    I have never seen a bonus or even made an annual salary of 50 thousand…

    But, Florida did require me to pay my own insurance years back…

    And, Florida did just start charging me a 3% tax on my income to pay

    What’s a Connected Educator?

    The idea of being connected in the Twentieth Century had a very different meaning than it does today. Back then being connected conjured up visions of pinstriped suits and shoulder holsters. Today, being connected brings up visions of computers, Smartphones, and tablets. A general misconception is that to be a connected educator, one needs to be a computer geek, with a vast knowledge of all things having to do with social media. Of course this is a vision that could be overwhelming to anyone who is only familiar with email, word processing and the ability to put a PowerPoint presentation together. Of course educators many have ventured onto FaceBook to connect with relatives and old high school friends, so the connected thing is not a totally foreign concept. Connecting is a process that we take one step at a time. The key however is to continue to take those steps to build and improve a connected network.
    Back in the day, for teachers to keep up with what was going on in education, they needed to read journals, attend conferences, and hope that their principal would pass along information to the staff. Often times the latest topics in education

    Release a report, make it appear like scholarly research (include footnotes, charts, graphs, and data), and suggest something provocative such as "teachers are overpaid"—the result? The media gives the claim and report a free and frequent ride.

    Walt Gardner, on his blog, has lamented about this exact phenomenon concerning The Heritage Foundation report, "Assessing the Compensation of Public-School Teachers" by Jason Richwine:
    Ordinarily, I wouldn't bother to comment about the study because none of it says anything that is really new. But because the media is giving it big play, I can't let the facts cited slide by. . . .If an author wants to make headlines, the surest way is to be provocative. But just because charges appear valid at first glance doesn't necessarily make them so. As I've written before: If teaching is such a plum job, then why don't more people go into the field? I'm still waiting for an answer, but
