The battle over whether or not the Los Angeles Unified School Board is controlled by supporters of public education and the UTLA or ‘school choice’ and unfettered charter school expansion remains up in the air.”– Los Angeles Education Examiner

Those supporting public education in the Los Angeles Unified School District had everything to lose in Tuesday’s election. The resignation of convicted felon Ref Rodriguez set up a situation where all of the board members supporting the privatization of education were elected in 2017 and the seats held by members of the opposing block were before the voters this year. Just one win by a candidate from the charter school industry would have meant that they would once again gain a majority on the board that is supposed to represent public school students. To give a business analogy, Coca-Cola’s management would be in charge of the Pepsi Board of Directors.

With all of the chances for really bad headlines, Tuesday brought very good results for those supporting public education. In Board District 1, George McKenna faced token opposition from a write-in candidate and according to the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk received 100% of the vote. Jackie Goldberg survived a campaign of vicious lies to defeat her opponent in Board District 5. She also earned more than 50% of the vote and will, therefore, avoid a runoff. “Messing around the Edges,” Should NYS Take a Deep Dive into All Educational Structures and Policies?

Every month the seventeen members of the Board of Regents convenes in Albany, the members, elected by a joint meeting of both houses of the state legislature for five year terms, they represent the judicial districts across the state. A diverse group, by gender, race, and background; former educators, lawyers, a nurse, a doctor, parent advocates, a wide range of New Yorkers who determine policy for education and the professions.

The topics vary from month to month and I sit in the audience tweeting to the masses (@edintheapple).

This month’s meeting began with a presentation by Ira Schwartz.  Ira is one of the people who truly understand the complexities of data and the intersection of federal and state regulations, beyond that, he has the unique ability to explain, to translate federal statutes into understandable English and to negotiate with the feds.

Ira is phasing into retirement, we will all miss his “lessons;” he is the professor teaching us all.

The dominant topic this year, and probably next year are Graduation Measures, the lengthy, very lengthy, exploration of high school graduation requirements. Does Oakland Have Too Many Schools

The district of Oakland has far too many schools which include both public and charter schools in the neighborhood.

Accordingly, many people have asked the question if Oakland has too many schools.

There are some issues of enrollment but the high number of schools developed is not just based on that alone.

Rather than looking at it as a simplified question, one should create demographics to assess the factors that culminate in categorizing schools according to sizes, the rate of tradeoffs to ensure the quality of education and the financial backup endowed upon the school.

Sadly enough, the OUSD has a very bad rating in terms of having just way too many schools.

When compared against the San Fransisco Unified School, Oakland has at least 93 schools in the district. However, the San Fransisco unified district has a total of 100 district schools and 20 charter schools. What does this leave the former with?

In 1948 President Truman, with a Democratic majority of both houses of Congress, set out to pass a health care program for all Americans. It did not pass. Why?

The AMA hired notorious political consultants Whitaker and Baxter.

With $3.5 million of the AMA’s money they launched a “National Education (or rather a miseducation) Campaign” to defeat Truman’s plan for a national Compulsory Health Insurance and buy Blue Cross/Blue Shield private insurance.

They generated a public crusade to fight for freedom of choice. Truman’s plan, they pointed out, would allow the US to drift towards socialism and Communism and lead to disaster.

According to historian Jill Lapore, an internally circulated CONFIDENTIAL- NOT FOR CIRCULATION plan was the real plan.  “While the immediate objective was to defeat Truman’s proposal, it’s long term objective was ‘to put a permanent stop to the agitation for socialized medicine in this country by:
