    Here’s the resolution adopted today by the NEA’s legislative body:

    ADOPTED AS AMENDED

    The NEA Representative Assembly directs the NEA President to communicate aggressively, forcefully, and immediately to President Barack Obama and US Secretary of Education Arne Duncan that NEA is appalled with Secretary Duncan’s practice of:

    1. Weighing in on local hiring decisions of school and school district personnel.

    2. Supporting local decisions to fire all school staff indiscriminately, such as his comments regarding the planned firings in Central Falls, RI.

    3. Supporting inappropriate use of high-stakes standardized test scores for both student achievement and

    To my mind, there is still nothing else worth reading to recognize the Fourth then this 1852 piece by Frederick Douglass. Please share with people you know today.

    Mr. President, Friends and Fellow Citizens: He who could address this audience without a quailing sensation, has stronger nerves than I have. I do not remember ever to have appeared as a speaker before any assembly more shrinkingly, nor with greater distrust of my ability, than I do this day. A feeling has crept over me, quite unfavorable to the exercise of my limited powers of speech. The task before me is one which requires much previous thought and study for its proper performance. I know that apologies of this sort are generally considered flat and unmeaning. I trust, however, that mine will not be so considered. Should I seem at ease, my appearance would much misrepresent me. The little experience I have had in addressing public meetings, in country schoolhouses, avails me nothing on the present occasion.

    The papers and placards say, that I am to deliver a 4th [of] July oration. This certainly sounds large, and out of the common way, for it is true that I have often had the privilege to speak in this beautiful Hall, and to address many who now honor me with their presence. But neither their familiar faces, nor the perfect gage I think I have of Corinthian Hall, seems to free me from embarrassment.

    Millions of teachers pay hundreds of millions in union dues each year so that bosses, Dennis and Randi (along with their posses of lawyers), can sit with the Political Elites and Oligarchs as they perfect their plans to deskill and deprofessionize teaching, corporatize public schools, reduce resources by hooking children up to computers, and to generally create paper unions that serve the needs of the Oligarchs.

    A great example of the doubletalk duplicity and cowardice can be found, or not found, rather, on NEA and AFT websites. Each organization has purportedly endorsed the upcoming parent and teacher march and conference in DC July 28-31, but how would the millions of teacher members know, even if they scoured AFT's or NEA'swebsites? Not a mention, anywhere.

    What puzzles reformers about university teaching is that amid abundant electronic devices and resources on campuses (hardware, software, and technical assistance) and well designed efforts to move professors into non-traditional ways of teaching, most faculty continue to lecture undergraduates (via PowerPoint to be sure). I explored this apparent contradiction in a post published September 28, 2009.

    WHO IS “we’’? The word is used in politics without a second thought, yet the meaning of “we” is forever unresolved.
    So begins a column in today's Boston Globe, by James Carroll, one whose title I have borrowed for this post. At the end of the first paragraph of this piece, written in the context of the continuing debate over the DREAM Act, Carroll notes of that legislation
    When Americans say “we,” who actually is included?

    Jefferson's words in the Declaration we commemorate today did not, as Carroll rightly notes, include all present - no Native Americans, slaves, women, or those whose political loyalties remained with the Crown. And here I note that my beloved Leaves on the Current is descended from both sides of that political dispute: one ancestor was a high ranking Revolutionary War officer while another went to Canada to maintain loyalty to England.

    And yet Jefferson's words, even as they excluded many here at the time, were universal in their sweep, as you will find if you keep reading.

    The 4th of July is very important to me. On July 4, 1776 General George Washington crossed the Delaware River to surprise the British at a party in Trenton, New Jersey and won our independence from Britain. We also changed the world forever by becoming the first Democracy where people could vote for their leaders. This call of freedom sounded all over the world and many other countries like Iraq, Sweden, and even England have since abandoned their monarchies for Democracies.

    What’s sad is that in recent years secularists have tried to take the Christ out of July 4th celebrations. They want to pretend that American is not a Christian country and that our systems of laws and government weren’t patterned after the Bible or that the American Eagle wasn’t chosen as our country’s symbol because by
