Nobody knows better than parents what their kids need. And nobody knows better than teachers, on the front lines every day, what students need to succeed. Respecting teachers, and promoting a partnership between the board, students, parents, and teachers will take politics out of the classroom, and allow the school board to get back to the basics of improving our schools. As a veteran teacher with seventeen years of public school teaching experience, I know a board member must be sensitive to neighborhood needs and focus on what students require. The success and future of our neighborhood schools is something I take as a personal responsibility. I've lived here all my life and attended local public schools. It would be an honor to represent you in Area Two.
Why I’m Running for School Board

After the City Council primary race I was grateful to have received so much support in a close race, especially pleased that the Clean Vote Act resonated with East Sacramentans. Of course I will continue to advocate for neighbors and for ethics in our politics. After the primary several people asked me to run for Sacramento City Unified District School Board.
Upon reflection I realized that that position embodied many of the same concerns and goals that informed my council race. Many of the same local issues predominated: in addition to education, this race, too, is about neighborhoods. Even if you don’t have children in school what happens in our school district is important to everyone. The quality of our schools impacts our neighborhood culture, and, because schools help shape our young citizens, they affect our future as a community. Schools even affect our property values.
Our public school system, open to all, is a guardian of democracy itself. As a classroom teacher for seventeen years I have hands-on experience. I know what works and what doesn’t. I know what our schools need to succeed. We need a comprehensive, public high school that serves Tahoe Park, Elmhurst, College Greens, Midtown and East Sacramento. We need a board member who will work with parents, the new superintendent, teachers and community leaders to improve our schools.
I would be honored to serve the community in Area Two.
Sincerely,
Ellen
