When it comes to stellar performances on public school student tests, the Bay Area dominates.
California public schools take end-of-course tests each year. State officials mash those scores together using a complicated formula to create an API -- Academic Performance Index -- for each school. The maximum API rating is 1,000; the state average is 790.
A little more than 200 schools in the state have API scores of 950 or higher, according to new, weighted state education figures covering the last three years. Half are in the Bay Area. A third are around Los Angeles. Five are in Sacramento. Nearly all are in wealthy neighborhoods.
