A replica of the Schooner Amistad was built at the Mystic Seaport, at taxpayer expense, and launched in March 2000.  In 2003, the Connecticut General Assembly made the Amistad Connecticut’s state ship.

Although paid for with Connecticut taxpayer funds, the ship is actually owned by Amistad America, Inc. a non-profit organization based in of Hamden, Connecticut.
