“Councilmember Reyes and guests recently paid tribute to Gilbert “Magu” Luján, an internationally known Chicano artist, who died Sunday, July 24, after battling cancer. He was 70. The shrine dedicated to the Chicanismo pioneer was created by Avenue 50 Studio Board Members Sybil Venegas and Laura Medina, and Artist Yreina Cervantez.” - http://lacityorgcd1.blogspot.com/
About his work Magu says, “Low-riders are sculptures, alters were installations, graffiti calligraphy. So I developed a vocabulary for Cicano art.” Towards the end of his artistic career he focused almost exclusively on carritos-themed works calling them “cultural vehicles” because they carried with them embedded statements about culture.
