Garland refuses to put up warning signs needed to enforce ban on cellphones in school zones 1:19 PM CT

Using a cellphone near a school in almost any area city could get you a ticket.

But not in Garland.

Garland is one of the few towns not to have put up warning signs, allowing enforcement of a state law prohibiting the use of handheld technology devices in active school zones.

The law was passed by the last Legislature. But before police can enforce it, cities must put up signs around schools cautioning drivers about the prohibition.

Rowlett and Sachse, which both have schools that are in the Garland Independent School District, have the signs and have been handing out tickets for more than year. The law says violations are a
