Oakland Teachers Plan 1-Day Strike Over Contract
The two sides couldn't reach an agreement on a new contract, despite two years of efforts. Consequently, the school board imposed terms that included no raises, though keeping benefits in place.
"I have no disrespect for their action," declared Superintendent Tony Smith. "I believe that we have to prepare the conditions to support children when they come and we will do that and we will be ready at every school for kids to come. And we're also recognizing that teachers have a right and need to strike."
