Explore Superintendent Mike Miles' 'Destination 2020,' his ambitious plan to overhaul DISD
On today's front page, we looked at New DISD Superintendent Mike Miles' ambitious plan to overhaul the district. If followed, he said, the roadmap will guide Dallas ISD to become one of the country's best.
If such lofty goals -- for instance, a 90 percent graduation rate by 2020 -- sounds familiar, it should. Superintendents before Miles have promised similar results -- and failed. Former DISD
SuperintendentMichael Hinojosa promised strong academic gains as part of his "Road to Broad" plan to win the coveted Broad Prize by 2010. Hinojosa fell short and, well, he's gone.
DISD trustees hired Miles to shake up the district, and his "Destination 2020" action plan does just that. Some highlights: In three years, DISD teachers will be in a pay-for-performance evaluation system. He also wants to create a "career-ready" certificate for eligible students who can graduate from high school and get first priority on jobs at local businesses.
Will Miles' ambitious action plan work? Can DISD reach his goals?
