No more decoy proms
Did you hear about the Mississippi high school that canceled its prom to keep student Constance McMillen from bringing her girlfriend as her date?
The story's next cruel twist: Constance and her girlfriend showed up to a private dance she was told was the replacement school prom, but only five other students were there. It was a decoy. The rest of her classmates were dancing the night away at a parent-sponsored event to which Constance wasn't invited.
Constance's story is the latest chapter in a long book on discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender students in public schools. And it's time we give victims the legal ability to fight back.
