Rescuing music education in San Diego


We’ve all heard the bad news about music education. Many school music programs are suffering. Budget cuts are brutal. The emphasis on standardized testing has made arts education vulnerable to the chopping block.
Yet there’s also good news. Leading local institutions such as the San Diego Symphony, San Diego Opera, Mainly Mozart and La Jolla Music Society valiantly continue their education efforts.
And three other organizations – the California Music Project and Orchestra Nova San Diego plus the San Diego Youth Symphony and Conservatory – have distinctive programs that are enlightening and much needed.
“We’re all talking to each other,” says Youth Symphony president and CEO  Dalouge Smith. “We’re all pursuing the same goal, which is more music education for kids. We’re each providing a different strategy to achieve that.”
