"This week, we have a great opportunity to support more than six million children. State leaders have recently reached common ground on legislation that would make California eligible for 'Race to the Top' education funds, and they should sign it into law with one important addition: Give school districts greater flexibility to meet the unique needs of their students.
Race to the Top is a $4.35 billion national program. It promotes rigorous academic standards, effective supports for educators, improved student data systems, drastic changes to persistently low-performing schools, and collaborations with labor and community organizations. In California, more than 466 local education agencies representing 1.7 million students have already expressed interest in this reform package."
