Emanuel says 25% of Chicago students can't be helped, according to CTU president
Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Chicago Teacher’s Union President Karen Lewis are at it again. According to CTU President Lewis, the two had good intentions of getting along before Emanuel took office, but they haven’t had much success at having a civil relationship during Emanuel’s first year in office.
The latest scuffle between the two involves shocking allegations that Lewis made regarding Emanuel's education beliefs concerning many of Chicago's young students.
During an interview on NBC-Chicago Channel 5, Lewis claims that she and Emanuel began their professional relationship in a very relaxed manner by attending a dinner and dance together prior to Emanuel being sworn in as the new mayor of Chicago. It was during that social event that Emanuel made a startling revelation to her regarding his philosophy on education in general.
Lewis said:
In that conversation, he did say to me that 25 percent of the students in this city are never going to be anything – never going to amount to anything – and he was never going to throw money at them.
Lewis said that her response to him after he made the comment was:
Even if you feel that way, you can’t say that to me. And he sort of poo-pooed it,
