TEACHING – THE NEW BUSINESS MODEL

I was very surprised to see a peculiar parent notice at my local grade school. This particular school has gone to great lengths to make sure teachers are treated as if they were in a business profession. Teachers’ pay was dependent on the students’ test scores, but the teacher had other opportunities to make additional money that would come directly from the parents. The parents were given a notice about options available to their students and then told what each of the options would cost. The parents were told to check yes or no for each “service” that a teacher might provide to their student. Here are some examples:

1. A teacher compliment or positive feedback to your child - $10 for the first compliment, $5 for each additional one.

2. A phone call or e.mail home to report some positive occurrence – $5 each call.

3. A hug for your child when they are having a bad day - $15 for the first one, $5 for each additional one.

4. One on one conferencing with your child in order to advise them as how to best handle confrontations with
