On (about) this date in history Mexico won its independence from Spain, declaring, "today we are a free and sovereign basket case." As of last week Mexico is a colony controlled by bureaucrats and cartels.

On to the news.

• In Legislative District 26, in the great northwest, Sen. Al "Sand Barge" Melvin can't seem to muster the barnacles to meet his challenger, Cheryl Cage, in a debate. According to one observer, "Captain Popeye has mistaken Olive Oyl for Bluto and is completely out of spinach."

Melvin won't attend a debate unless his requirements are met: He wants the debate to include the district's five libertarians, four homeless Greens, three House of Representatives candidates, two turtledoves and a partridge in a pear tree. "I prefer to be lost in the crowd," he admitted.

Adm. Melvin is sailing out of an upcoming debate at Mountain View High School because "I'm allergic to public schools. Why can't we hold the debate at a GOP Unity Rally?"
