Police arrested eight students at Washington Academy in Cedar Grove after a fight broke out Thursday, according to police Capt. Richard Vanderstreet.
Officers were called about 9:30 a.m. to the school, which is located at 520 Pompton Ave., on a report of a large fight.
Arriving officers found school staff members holding back students who had been involved in a scuffle, according to a report.
Four students suffered minor injuries and a staff member injured his wrist, police said.
"A subsequent investigation revealed the disturbance had originated inside the school when two female students became engaged in a physical altercation," police said in a release.
The situation escalated when three male students joined the fight, police reported.
Staff members separated the students and walked one boy into the parking lot, the report states.
At that point a male student broke a classroom window and he and the other students climbed out, went into the parking lot and began fighting, police said.
Police arrested and charged eight students – three adults, five juveniles – with disorderly conduct, Vanderstreet said.
The adults were identified as Nadine Centeno, 18, of Passaic, John A. Sanchez, 18, of Fairlawn and Ronald T. Carter, 19, of East Orange. They were all processed and released pending an appearance in municipal court, police said. Five juveniles, ages 16-17, were processed and released to their guardians pending
