Teachers, Students Take To Streets To Protest CutsLOS ANGELES (CBS) — Millions of students, teachers and parents are expected to rally in cities and college campuses in California and many other states to protest deep spending cuts to schools and universities.Demonstrations, marches, teach-ins and walkouts are planned nationwide Thursday in what is being called the “March 4th National Day of Action for Public Education.”Events are being held on most of California's public colleges and universities to protest budget cuts that have led to canceled classes, faculty furloughs and steep fee hikes.Students, teachers and school employees are converging in Sacramento to convince lawmakers to restore funding to public schools.
I’ve always loved a good protest, and the March 4th demonstrations by students and faculty was no different. Hundreds of thousands of Americans got together and protested — with signs and banners, the good old-fashioned American way — the deep cuts in education being experienced all over the country.
Over at Think Progress, I documented many of these cuts in states’ public education systems, not only at the college level but also K-12. Our team put out a great Progress Report on the issue of how progressive and conservative state legislators are tackling their budget gaps, and I encourage you to read it — it’s really telling who’s deciding to balance their budgets in a reasonable way that includes raising taxes on those who can afford it and who’s simply decided to balance their budgets on the backs of the poor, the elderly, and students.
