I Miss Teaching — A Late-Night Musing
I saw a tweet from a 24-year veteran teacher today, which brought the final hammer down on my up-and-down kind of day. This was a day where the bad news seemed to outweigh the good. Chicago is being chewed up and chipped away at again. Philadelphia and other cities are traumatized by what the leaders of their cities and states are doing to the children. The governor of my state has decided to put in place a budget that is blatantly anti-teacher and anti-student; he also is pushing the requirement for the teacher “bar exam,” with the full support of the AFT. I mean…ouch!
Anyway, the tweet said, “You know what I really want to do again? I want to teach.”
It hit a little harder because I’ve been craving the classroom lately. I like my job okay, and I love writing and working alongside the activists that are going to turn this around in New York State. I do enjoy the freedom to be
