READ ACROSS AMERICA 2013
Read Across America is a national day celebrating reading —this year on Friday, March 1, 2013—sponsored by the National Education Association and California Teachers Association, along with many of the country’s leading literacy and youth groups.
Reading Takes You Places!
The more children read, the better they read. And the more they read outside of school, the better they do in school. Help teach children that reading takes you places by surfing waves in San Diego, climbing Half Dome in Yosemite, and seeing the sights of San Francisco by cable car just by opening our 2013 selected book.
This year, in honor of CTA’s 150th Anniversary, we’ve chosen “Our California” written by Pam Munoz Ryan and beautifully illustrated by Rafael Lopez. This book highlights interesting features or the historical importance of 14 California cities with colorful, evocative and eye-filling imagery. “Our California” is a wonderful way to show children the spirit of California.
Everyone Can Celebrate!
There are many ways to celebrate and plan a reading event! Invite police officers and firefighters to read their favorite books to your school. Parents can volunteer to read in their child’s classroom. Librarians can arrange special story hours. Practice dramatic readings with your students. Invite a local news anchor or even your mayor to read to your group. Ask your local bookstore to host a children’s read-in. The list is endless!

1. Start Early
The ideal time to begin sharing books with children is during infancy. From early on, children should own books, be read to often, and see others reading and writing. Also, children should be encouraged to talk about books they already know and to elaborate or add their own storylines or create new endings.
