n Memoriam: Rigoberto Ruelas
(en español después) I went to Rigoberto Ruelas's service Wednesday night at the Catholic Church because I wanted to physically be there to show solidarity with his family and community. I also went as another victim of LAUSD's administrative treachery curious for insights into what could have possible pushed a passionately vibrant 29 year old teacher to take his own life.
What I found was the image of an honest and engaged teacher related in the stories told by family, friends, colleagues, and students who described a man who was everything that LAUSD is not. He always had time and found resources for everyone and tried to inspire his students with a love for education.
What I came away with was the sense of a man who was so honest he could not image that LAUSD had set him up in a no win situation where the grinding daily cost of even the moderate gains he could make dealing with newly arrived ESL students, without getting the financial and administrative support he needed, made true
