"DAVIS, Calif. -- Students protesting California education cuts marched toward Interstate 80 in Davis and threatened to shut down the freeway Thursday afternoon, and that evening, a busy intersection was closed to traffic because of people who sat on streets.
The freeway confrontation came on a day when students around the state gathered to protest steep fee hikes, canceled classes and faculty furloughs. The protest, which is part of the Day of Action, comes at a time when the state is facing a $20 billion deficit.
Police in Davis fired a projectile pepper ball, hitting some people in the legs. Protesting students stood toe-to-toe with officers a short distance from I-80.Officers swung batons at students and eventually dragged away Laura Mitchell, one of the organizers."I'm worried about everybody's safety but we're doing this as a group," Mitchell said. The California Highway Patrol slowed down traffic on westbound I-80 as a safety precaution, but the road remained open."Public safety's impacted, we've got to make sure that those freeways stay open," Marvin Williard from the CHP said."
