If you or anyone you know and care about live in Michigan, or if you care whatsoever about the public school system in this country--or, for that matter, education of our children in general--I urge you, in the strongest possible terms, to read up on Michigan State House Bills 6004 & 5923, and State Senate Bills 1358 & 620.

If you think I'm over-hyping this issue, read the following letter, posted earlier today on the Bloomfield Hills School District website by superintendent Rob Glass. I repeat: This was posted by the superintendent of the BLOOMFIELD HILLS SCHOOL DISTRICT.

As in, one of the wealthiest and most Republican areas in Michigan.

As in, Mitt Romney's home town, also the home town of Cranbrook.

Believe me, Rob Glass is NOT known for panicking or over-hyping issues, and I guarantee you that he's gonna catch a lot of flack for speaking out so strongly on a political issue--especially speaking out against a series of bills being pushed--HARD--by Republican Governor Rick Snyder and the Republican-held state legislature.

ACLU 8th Annual “Youth Social Justice Forum” Gives Voice to MPS High School Students

On Wednesday, November 28^th, I spent the day talking with high school students at the ACLU’s 8^th “Youth Social Justice Forum.” Attended by over 400 high school students, subjects included-

police oversight
racism
gay rights
student rights
bullying
voting
MPS

In a workshop on the Y.E.S. “Student Bill of Rights” discussion was lively with both praise and criticism of MPS schools and classrooms.

Many students spoke of good teachers that care about them and go the extra mile to help them succeed. At the same time there was a theme describing some teachers that was universally agreed on by students. One MPS student, whom I asked to write out his views, said-

“I’m a student that takes pride in my education at school and everywhere else. So I have a great interest in anyone who wants to teach me. Throughout my entire high school career I have noticed educators that are not teaching students to the best of their ability. I call them ‘textbook teachers.’ These are teachers that rely on textbooks to do their job for them. They say ‘read these pages, answer these questions.’ They just give us book work.”

It became clear to me through the course of the discussion that students want teachers to work hard at teaching all students, whatever their learning style. They want teacher to “know them a person.” They “want and expect better.”

Students felt that some teachers are already there but all teachers need to be on board.

There was universal criticism of cafeteria food.

On Wednesday, November 28 the ACLU of Wisconsin Foundation will join our community partners in sponsoring a daylong event to teach high school students to celebrate and exercise their rights and protect their liberties. The event is free to participating high schools and will be held at the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee.

The Youth Social Justice Forum program uses realistic role-play, hands-on workshops and hot topics from the news about the rights of young people. Students will learn about new media, public art, civics and government and will be offered a chance to discuss racial profiling, bullying, LGBT rights and other topics relevant to youth rights and responsibilities. Participants will also have an opportunity to learn about restorative justice and peace circles.

To directly experience what it is like to vote, students will participate in a mock election using actual voting machines supplied by the City of Milwaukee Election Commission. This year the election topic will be police-community relations in the City of Milwaukee. Given recent events in Milwaukee, the discussion of race, racial profiling and police relations will be overarching themes throughout the 24 workshops.

Poverty Doesn't Matter in Education? Tell That to an 11-Year-Old Living in the Tenderloin

Back in Spring 2011 a Harvard-convened think tank called Futures of School Reform—20 well-respected educators, academics, and politicians—predicted that over the next few years the education reform conversation will shift away from blaming teacher tenure for student achievement results to considering how out-of-school factors related to poverty affect learning.

When you watch the above clip of Sera, an 11-year-old girl living in a one-room rent-subsidized apartment in San Francisco's Tenderloin with her mother and sister, it's not hard to see why that shift has to happen. Her story is part of the PBS Frontline Poor Kids series and it's pretty heartbreaking to watch Sera describe her life as "not a fun experience." She goes on to note that "It's annoying that people say 'It doesn't matter, it's just a little problem, it's over now, get over it.' No, it's not over. It changes you. I'm still the same old obnoxious Sera but, deep down, I'm a whole new person. Well, I'm a whole different person."

Sera's walking into school every day with the burden of everything her family's going through—and there are too many other kids out there being changed like her. According to UNICEF, a full 23.1 percent of American kids now live in poverty. Many education reformers worry that acknowledging that a kid like Sera isn't able to walk outside because of drug addicts and crime will be used as an excuse for lowering academic expectations. Sure, no one wants lowered expectations—a "you can't achieve because there are addicts in your hood" mentality. But it's also a mistake to act like schools packed with kids in Sera's situation don't need extra help and resources, not just on a school level, but on a community level.

The Futures of School Reform group said the shift to addressing poverty as key to education reform would happen, "not because of sudden prosperity and deep public-sector pockets, nor because of a broad shift in public sentiment that activates new moral commitments to the ideal of educating other people's children, but as an outgrowth of the same hard-nosed, pragmatic, evidence-based orientation that for the moment is supporting the unlikely claim that schools can do it alone."

When you listen to a kid like Sera though, it's hard not to feel like what we need is to find the kind of deep moral commitment that refuses to allow children to live in such conditions. After all, isn't that what democracy, at its heart, should be about?

As many as one in five U.S. charter schools should be shut down because of poor academic performance, according to a group representing states, districts and universities that grant them permission to operate.

The National Association of Charter School Authorizers said 900 to 1,300 of the privately run, publicly financed schools should close because they are in the bottom 15 percent of public schools in their states. The Chicago-based group’s members -- such as the Los Angeles Unified School District and the State University of New York -- oversee more than half of the nation’s 5,600 charter schools.

The announcement represents a challenge to the fast-growing charter-school movement, created as an alternative to conventional districts and operating without many of their rules. To hold the organizations accountable, states must pass new laws that would shut down poor performers, said Greg Richmond, president of the charter-school organization.

Sure, America and even Britain have talent.

Turns out, Los Angeles Unified does, too.

The nation's second-largest school district is organizing a variety show to spotlight the talents of its 60,000-plus employees while raising money to fund after-school programs.

"I want to really show the quality of talent we have," said Ted Johnson, an administrative coordinator for the district's Beyond the Bell Branch. "We're going to have costumes, lighting. I want to really make this top drawer."

Johnson said he's received a couple dozen calls since LAUSD posted a call for applicants, including inquiries from a would-be comedian, a jug band, salsa dancers and a lot of singers, including Assistant Superintendent Earl Perkins.

"I got a call from a principal who plays the bagpipes," Johnson said. "I've heard he's pretty good."

Although plans are still tentative, Johnson hopes to hold auditions in mid-January
