Is It Something I Said?: What We Say...What They Hear!

I received an email from a parent the other day. It wasn't a hostile email. It was written in a polite tone. It was just a parent trying to find out what was going on in my classroom regarding his daughter. If this happened with my kids, I probably would have written an email like it as well. I also really appreciated the fact that this parent sent the email to me, instead of going straight to my principal.

The email went something like this: "K" was very upset last night. She told her mother that you said to her "I

A Note On The IVO-IPO Endorsements

At this moment I'm lying on the kitchen floor with a dog who is possibly at the end of her life, or possibly just sick. It's hard to tell with kidney disease.

It may be an all-nighter. I'm giving her drops of medicine and water from the tip of my finger.

I've been here before.

Anyway she has indicated that its's cool with her if I blog from my phone so that's what I'm going to do.

Why Are Billionaires Funding School Board Races in Louisiana?

There are few investigative writers in education journalism these days. It is disturbingly rare to find writers who look behind the press releases, the hype and spin.
One place that cries out for investigative journalism is Louisiana, the locus for the most extreme privatization schemes. The governor is now imposing the New Orleans model on the entire state, and many hold up New

Obama To Romney: Yes, We Have Fewer Ships Than 1916 – But Also Fewer Horses And Bayonets

Romney, Obama Spar Over Education In Foreign Policy Debate

Much to the chagrin of moderator Bob Schieffer, Monday night's presidential debate took a decidedly domestic turn.

During a conversation about what America needs to do to remain internationally competitive, President Barack Obama took the opportunity to lace into Republican presidential contender Mitt Romney on teacher hiring.

"Governor Romney, when you were asked by teachers whether or not this would help the economy grow, you said this isn't going to help the economy grow," Obama said.

This dispute dates back to the last few months. The Republican presidential candidate mocked Obama in June

Obama and Romney show stark differences on school funding

President Obama has tried to steer education policy in New Jersey and nationwide by dangling competitive grants in front of states that promised a raft of changes, such as raising standards, tying teacher evaluations to student growth and expanding charters.

It Took Less Than 30 Minutes for 'Horses and Bayonets' to Become a Meme

The final debate between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney was bound to spawn a meme or two in in the hours after the debate. But actually, it only took a few minutes for the Internet to latch on to the zinger of all zingers. After Romney criticized the administration by claiming that the United States Navy has fewer ships today than it did in 1916, Obama seized the moment.
"You mention the Navy, for example, and the fact that we have fewer ships than we did in 1916. "Well Governor, we also have fewer horses and bayonets," said the president. "We have these things called aircraft carriers and

Obama rips Romney on military size: ‘The question is not a game of battleship’

President Barack Obama laughed off Mitt Romney’s argument that he had weakened the military through downsizing by joking that it was only natural for advancements in technology to make obsolete older weapons—such as those from the Civil War. In a discussion about the size of the military,.

Does board delay in extending Davis’ contact in Atlanta signal a lasting estrangement?

I am unsure about Erroll Davis’ future as leader of APS after tonight’s decision by the Atlanta school board to hold off on extending his contract. The board met behind closed doors for three hours to discuss Davis and his contract.
Davis is still dealing with the fallout from his decision to remove six administrators from North Atlanta High, including principal Mark MyGrant. I continue to hear from North Atlanta parents who insist that Davis misled the public on why he removed the school administrators.
Those parents contend that Davis was both callous and careless in failing to consider the impact of his actions

Confusing because in the first story, about a little boy named Ryder, it labels him as being on the "autism spectrum." It states he received services in preschool and yet, he can't get them in SPS? If he has a diagnosis, then he should be receiving services. Diane Ravitch's blog: [image: Click on picture to Listen to Diane Ravitch] Just Another Nonsensical Policy in Florida by dianerav A reader responded to an earlier post about Florida’s decision to set different academic goals for children of different races: “As a Florida teacher since 1997, I have watched our state board enact bone-headed policies that make no sense, but of all of them, the race-based variable learning goals has to be most useless and inane, not to mention anti-education and unworkable. There are so many questions about the way these standards will be applied I wo... more »

Where Parent Revolution Lost Me :: Frederick M. Hess: Where Parent Revolution Lost Me *by Frederick M. Hess • Oct 22, 2012 at 6:23 am Cross-posted from Education Week* Hidy all, I'm back. Want to thank Heather, Bill, and Sarah for some terrific posts. We're about to head into heavy pre-election mode, but there was one particular development while I was gone that I feel compelled to address. I've been skeptical but sympathetic on the parent trigger. But the parent trigger crowd pretty much lost me when Parent Revolution's National Communications Director David Phelps sent out a cr... more »

College Board: Rise in students in AP classes accompanied by rise in performance | Get Schooled: College Board: Rise in students in AP classes accompanied by rise in performance by Maureen Downey Earlier this month, I linked to a* controversial essay in the Atlantic by a former college professor and high school teacher* criticizing Advanced Placement courses. I introduced the issue by noting that there’s a push under way in Georgia to get more high schools students into AP classes. There is also a debate over whether students fare better taking AP classes at their high schools o... more »

Here is an excerpt from a book called “Excellence For All: How a New Breed of Reformers Is Transforming America’s Public Schools,” by Jack Schneider. This part of the book explai... more »

Daily Kos: The Campaign for our Public Schools: The Campaign for our Public Schools by rss@dailykos.com (teacherken) consists of 378 Letters to President Obama From educators, parents, students and citizens. It was organized and promoted by Diane Ravitch with the assistance of Anthony Cody (who coordinated the Save Our Schools March and National Call to Action in 2011, having previously organized a national Teachers Letters to President Obama effort). It begins with a letter by Ravitch, from which I quote the following: Public school educators are demoralized these days. Many wo... more »

Louisiana Educator: Can VAM be Fixed?: Can VAM be Fixed? by Michael Deshotels Superintendent John White believes he has a solution to the problem of teachers in top rated schools receiving an “ineffective” because of the VAM portion of the new teacher evaluation system. It was discovered recently that some high performing students in exclusive magnet schools sometimes experience a lull or slowdown in their academic gains caused by factors outside the control of the teacher. Even though such students are normally high performers, in some cases a classroom of high performers may per... more »

Where are Obama and Romney on the Dropout Crisis and School Funding? | Education on GOOD: Where are Obama and Romney on the Dropout Crisis and School Funding? [image: studying.student] When it comes to education, neither President Obama's nor Governor Romney's campaign has started a real dialogue about the failure of America's K-12 schools—or the grassroots initiatives working to combat the crisis. However, a recent panel at the University of Southern California, "No Policy Left Behind? K-12 Education in the 2012 Campaign," tackled two of the biggest issues the candidates should be... more »

Signs of hope on the road to doom | Jerry Large | The Seattle Times: Signs of hope on the road to doom Policy-driven by data and results could overcome the usual politics. *Jerry Large* *Seattle Times staff columnist* A lot of problems that seem unending do have solutions. You may not hear about them in a political debate, but they exist. Washington state is brimming with ideas that could make the future better than the present. No, I'm not on happy drugs. If anything, I'm probably more likely than you to think we're speeding down the highway toward doom. Living immersed in the news... more »

Diane Ravitch's blog: Thomas Friedman Needs Your Help by dianerav I am assuming Thomas Friedman knows a lot about foreign affairs, which is what he mostly writes about. He certainly knows very little about America’s public schools. I wonder when was the last time he stepped into a school or talked to a real teacher. My guess: it has been many years. Maybe he went to a public school. His article in Sunday’s New York Times demonstrates that he is not only out of touch, but woefully misinformed. Everything he knows about Race to the Top he learned not by any research or school visit... more »
