“On Parents, Better To Coax Or Coerce?”

Here’s an interesting article from a group called The Center For Michigan. It’s called On Parents, Better To Coax Or Coerce?
Here’s an excerpt:
The key is “to create conditions that allow parents to be more involved,” and not to make the burden of involvement rest entirely on the parent, Buckman said.

In Which I Am Instructed by DOE Experts

Today I went for an exciting day scoring kids I have never met and never will meet. This is because I, like every teacher in the state, cannot be trusted. I am a lowlife, dishonest, worthless piece of protoplasm, as are all teachers. Naturally, I cannot evaluate papers without help from the experts at Tweed. Likely none of them have ever taught so they aren't corrupted as we all are.

First of all, we should "bring a printed copy of the State-posted rating guide for the appropriate subject area." This is because we are patently

Alfie Kohn and Pasi Sahlberg Blogathon

I am putting out a call for people to participate in an Alfie Kohn and Pasi Sahlberg Blogathon.kohnsalhlbergcartoon
This blogathon is in response to the “Creating a great school for all - an evening with Alfie Kohn and Pasi Sahlberg,” Wednesday, February 20, 2013 at Red Deer College in Red Deer, Alberta, Canada.
Rather than have Alfie Kohn and Pasi Sahlberg simply show up and talk for a couple hours just so we can all go back to work the next day like nothing happened, I really wish to encourage us all to participate in a public blogathon. This way, Kohn and Sahlberg’s talks will act as a catalyst for others to talk and learn.
What is a blogathon?
  • A blogathon is just a bunch of people who want to write about something and then collect all the links in one, easily accessible place for all to see. It’s a way of starting and continuing an important conversation.
How to participate:
  • Between now and February 20, blog about something related to education, Alfie Kohn and Pasi Sahlberg.
  • Write as few or as many posts as you like.
  • You don’t have to attend the Red Deer event to participate. Anyone and everyone is welcome to give this a go.
  • If you do not have a place to publish your thoughts, you can e-mail me, and I will share your post here on my blog. My e-mail is joe.bower.teacher@gmail.com
  • See that picture at the top of the post? If you like, you can use it in your post.
  • If you are on Twitter, share your post by using the hashtag #kohnandsahlberg
  • If you are a blogger, I challenge you to find a colleague who does not blog and get them to participate.
  • If you have your own blog or website, go ahead and publish your post. To ensure that I find your post, please fill out the online participation form (bottom of this post). This will allow me to collect and link to your post when I do up the summary for this event. If you want to link back to this post or leave a link to yours in the comment area, that would be groovy! The form is at the bottom of this post.
Prompts to spark your thinking:
  • What elements of Kohn and/or Sahlberg’s work inspires you?
  • What should be the role of homework in a student’s development?
  • In what ways does school need to change?
  • Why does testing and comparing schools continue to be over-emphasized?
  • What is the appropriate balance of local and government in shaping curriculum, instruction and school life?

Here is a letter of support written for the teachers by Change the Stakes and MORE member Diana Zavala for our NYC based Change the Stakes Group. Diana is also a parent opt-outer for her kids.
Dear Superintendent Banda,

It has come to our attention that you plan to discipline teachers in the Seattle Public Schools who refuse to administer the MAP test in the Seattle school districts despite the unanimous support that their action has had across the nation, which has inspired all of us resisting the damage that high-stakes, standardized testing that for the past 10 years has negatively affected schools, communities (school closures, charters), and students (achievement gap, segregation/apartheid, drop in college preparedness) and teachers (high teacher turn-over) alike.

We firmly believe you are making a grave mistake in taking any punitive action against these brave individuals who acted (finally) for the benefit of the students. Like the teachers in Newton, Conn. who risked their lives to protect the children, the teachers in Seattle are living heros and an

Detroit School Closures, Kristof On Pre-K: Ed Tonight

Today In School Closures... Detroit is slated to close even more schools, reports CBS. Enrollment in the Motor City has dwindled from 150,000 to a projected 40,000. "A deficit elimination plan obtained by The Detroit News says the district will close 28 schools [by 2016]," CBS reports. "The closures are expected to save DPS about $13.4 million in operating expenses, but hundreds of district employees will be out of a job." The Free Press has a letter from emergency manager Roy Roberts to the district's employees: DPS has "accelerated the time line for its return to complete fiscal stability," he wrote. But Roberts hasn't said which schools will be shuttered.

Kristof, Fan Of Pre-K? In his latest piece, New York Times columnist argues for the importance of early childhood education. When Kareem Dale, now a special advisor to President Barack Obama, was in high school, all he wanted to do was wrestle. But as a student who was partially blind, that wasn't easy.

Dale's school made it possible for him to participate in the sport by creating a rule that wrestlers always needed to be touching their opponent. "It allowed me to wrestle throughout public high school," Dale said. "That experience of wrestling gave me confidence, it made me healthier, it was really an extraordinary experience."

But hundreds of other students with disabilities may not have had an opportunity in school sports, a 2010 Government Accountability Office report suggested. The U.S. Education Department's Office of Civil Rights on

Mr. Martire omits some very important points in his article. The first is that his payment amount

At least in Oakland, custodial workers have gone years without a raise and numerous positions have been outsourced. A key and often overlooked outsourced position is afterschool workers. Increasingly they have been expected to shoulder mo... more »

Daily Kos: Obama Reboot: Obama Reboot by rss@dailykos.com (teacherken) President Obama’s Inaugural Address was an unapologetic, unequivocal progressive manifesto of domestic policies.I needed that. So begins today's *New York Times* column by Charles M. Blow, whose title I have borrowed for this post.He offers selection from the President's words, but what catches my attention and provokes my thinking are some of his own words, such as those with which I began. You can of course simply read the column. If you do I will be more than satisfied. I will below offer some more of Blow... more »

School Tech Connect: Monty Neil Tonight: Monty Neil Tonight by noreply@blogger.com (Tim Furman) [image: School Tech Connect] 7 PM, Hartzell Methodist Church. Inch by inch, row by row, people are waking up to overtesting that's going on in our schools. Even the sleepiest people. By the way, the testing is not something the teachers are asking for. It's political. It's part of the corporate takeover of public education. You can't have something like SB7 and not expect a barrage of idiotic "formative" testing. If you were a legislator, for example, and you voted for SB7, and you ha... more »

Mike Klonsky's SmallTalk Blog: The Battle in Seattle: Rahm undermines BBB's school-closing commission by Mike Klonsky Is Rahm really flipping off BBB's own hand-picked School Utilization Commission, led by former ComEd boss *Frank Clark*, which recommended keeping hands off of high schools when it comes to school closings? If he is it won't be the first time he's dissed the hired help. Remember his hand-picked arbitrator during the teachers strike who recommended a 15-20% pay raise for teachers? Clark's commission wants as few as 15 schools closed instead of the 200 being pushed b... more »

NYC Educator: John King Is the Worst Person in the World*: John King Is the Worst Person in the World* by NYC Educator It's not really easy to become a superlative. You have to work very hard at it, and there is always tremendous competition. But NYS Education Commissioner John King is breaking new ground of late, leapfrogging over other "reformers" to capture a title they're all clamoring for. How did he do this? It's simple, actually. When Mike Bloomberg once again failed to negotiate a junk science evaluation for teachers, reneging on a deal with the UFT, John King decided he'd... more »
