12th grade NAEP scores: Does the common core deserve the credit?
Sent to the Hartford Courant, May 7, 2014It is a premature to give the "new academic standards" of the common core credit for Connecticut's good performance on the 12th grade NAEP reading test ("State Students Excel On 'Nation's Report Card'," May 7). First, the improvement was not uniform: Grade 8 scores increased less than grade 12 scores, and grade 4 scores stayed the same a

Can 5 Year Old Children Be Fined for Bullying? Maybe it’s Coming in California.

little criminals

We have officially crossed over into the Land of Make Believe by holding young children responsible for childish behavior with adult consequences. From The California Daily Breeze:
Carson is moving to become the first California city to criminalize bullying, paving the way for misdemeanor charges to be filed against children as young as 5 years old.
If the City Council puts its final stamp of approval on the plan May 20, the new law would take effect June 19. On Tuesday, all five council members voted tentatively to push through the change in the city’s Municipal Code.
“This is a very serious issue that we face not only in the state of California but throughout the United States,” said Councilman Mike Gipson, who introduced the ordinance and is spearheading a campaign to make Carson “bully-free.”

Imagine what that data set will look like for a 5 year old who has the maturity of a 5 year old and calls someone a “doo-doo head”.  If a child calls someone names numerous times, the data could include criminal misdemeanor charges for the infraction.  Could it also include a kindergarten kiss on the cheek?  If that is considered sexual in nature, probably so:
Carson officials want to make it clear to bullies that the behavior — whether it’s physical, sexual, online or verbal in nature — won’t be tolerated, no matter the age.

The ordinance would target anyone from the ages of 5 to 18 who makes another person feel “terrorized, frightened, intimidated, threatened, harassed or molested (in a way that) serves no legitimate purpose.” First-time offenders could be ticketed for an infraction and fined Can 5 Year Old Children Be Fined for Bullying? Is Common Core Creating the Code for a Computerized Education System?

Astronomer Stephen Hawking recently raised concerns about the threat artificial intelligence poses to human civilization.  But even if we are not all turned into drones by some supermind, major changes are afoot, revealing both a bright and dark side of the technologies we find so addictive.
As teachers, most of us are excited to see our students turned on by the latest technologies. Computers allow students to conduct research on the web, email experts for information, gather images and view videos from around the world. Students can use digital tools to create, rather than simply consume. Students can make their own podcasts, tutorials, or creative projects.
But technology has a darker side as well. I have been reading a book, called Mindless: Why Smarter Machines are Making Dumber Humans, which explores these dimensions of 21st century technology. Author Simon Head describes the ways in which computers are being used to reorganize and manage all sorts of aspects of life and commerce.
American society is now organized for the convenience and profitability of corporations, who, as Gilens and Page recently documented, hold sway over the political process.  Those corporations have discovered the extraordinary value of "Computer Business Systems," which allow all sorts of processes to be rendered more efficient.
As I read of the ways these systems work, I began to understand some of the imperatives driving 21st century education "reform."
CBSs are amalgams of different technologies that are pulled together to perform highly

The First Official Review of My Book

May 9, 2014
The first posted review of my newly-released book, A Chronicle of Echoescomes from retired Chicago teacher and fellow blogger Ken Previti.
My book became available on Amazon.com on Sunday, April 27, 2014.
I believe Ken bought it immediately. I know that he read it voraciously.
Below is part of Ken’s review of A Chronicle of Echoes, including this wonderful image:

Please do not think that a book that generously provides extensive data and sources is dry or boring; on the contrary, Schneider brings it all together in a high intensity, high interest amalgam of people and money. Names are named. This book reveals the factual, financial inter-relationships of Michelle Rhee, Rahm Emanuel, Joel Klein, Bill Gates, Jeb Bush, Eva Moskowitz, Wendy Kopp, Eli Broad, Arne Duncan, Paul Vallas, Jonah Edelman, Michael Bloomberg, the Walton Family, and more – including their tax free foundations. Key plutocratic names in the multibillion dollar Empire of Corporate Education Reform. Infamous names.
Notice that these are factual, financial inter-relationships; Corporate Education Reform is really all about the money.
How and where did she find all of this information? “I have researched books, newspaper articles, blog entries, email exchanges, interviews, web pages, advertisements, income tax forms, dissertations, conference materials, meeting minutes, video presentations, legislation and formal testimony.”
Mercedes Schneider’s research, articles, and blog posts are often cited by established journals and well known authors, such as Diane Ravitch. If she didn’t already have a PhD in applied statistics and data research, this book would be her eminently readable dissertation for a PhD. Her credibility is well established. Now, we are treated to an entire book of her own.
