Gov. Scott silent regarding future of his education commissioner

HERALD/TIMES TALLAHASSEE BUREAU

Yo Tony
Mr Broad wants his prize back!!!
No wait, second thought he said you could keep it!

Nationally celebrated education reformer Tony Bennett was wooed to Florida in January to bring stability to the state education department.
But barely eight months later, his tenure as education commissioner could be in trouble.
Scathing emails obtained by the Associated Press suggest that Bennett, while serving as education commissioner in Indiana last year, intervened to raise the grade for a charter school run by an influential Republican donor. Bennett was already under fire in Florida, where influential superintendents and state Board of Education members have raised questions about the validity of school grades.
Gov. Rick Scott has been silent on the scandal engulfing his education commissioner. He declined two opportunities to speak publicly on the matter Tuesday, saying he had not read the AP report.
Scott spokeswoman Melissa Sellers later said Bennett was “clearly committed to making Florida’s education system the best in the nation.”
But with the 2014 governor’s race on the horizon, observers say Scott has a tough decision to make.
“If the governor wants to appeal to moderates across the state, he has to get rid of [Bennett],” said Brian Peterson, a professor at Florida International University and editor of the Miami Education Review online newsletter. “If he doesn’t, the message is that the game is rigged, and that public schools are going to be

Here is what a real Democrat says in the face of injustice

Bobby Simmons, the lone independent Democrat on the Bridgeport Board of Education provides a valuable lesson to other Democratic elected officials around the state and nation.  When faced with injustice and wrongdoing you stand and up speak out.  The responsibility to speak out is even greater when the perpetrator is a fellow Democrat.
Bobby Simmons’ commentary piece appears in today’s Connecticut Post and is entitledPlantation life in Bridgeport
I wish to thank the Connecticut Post editorial board for its recent editorial highlighting the outrageous allegations leveled against your newspaper and a highly regarded reporter, Daniel Tepfer,  by the chairman of the Bridgeport Board of Education and former campaign treasurer of Mayor Bill Finch.

Mayor Nutter’s Door

Rebecca PoyourowMayor Nutter didn’t come out the front door of his office in City Hall last night.  I’m sure mayors have good reason to have alternate exit routes available, and it may be that he uses that other door regularly, rather than just yesterday.  I’m not sure, since I’m not in the habit of sitting outside his office.  However, I do know for sure that he didn’t come out the front door last night.
If Mayor Nutter had come out the front door of his office last night, he would have encountered our group of public schools advocates, which included several parents, a retired teacher, a former principal, the head of the Philadelphia branch of the NAACP, and a 7th grade student at a school targeted for closure.  We were sitting outside his office in order to underscore the message that thousands of Philadelphians have been trying to send to him and to the SRC over the last year:  that mass closings of Philadelphia’s public schools undermine our children’s educational prospects, compromise kids’ safety, contribute to the drop-out crisis, uproot communities, and destroy jobs and neighborhoods—all for little to no savings.
Earlier in the day, members of the NAACP, Black Clergy, Action United, and Parents United for Public Education

CVCA, Chicago's behemoth high school, to be partially demolished.

Architecture writer Lee Bey has been following the various phases of reform and restructuring over the years at Chicago Vocational Career Academy. Now, he reports, a significant portion of CVCA, an architecturally-important building that is the city's second-largest public school, would be demolished as part of a $42 million bid to turn the structure into a tech academy.
The PBC on Monday issued a request for qualifications seeking contractors who can handle the three-phase overhaul of the former Chicago Vocational High School at 2100 E. 87th St.  When the dust clears, the school would become a six-year school with a curriculum focusing on science, technology, engineering and math.
Here's something I posted back in May, 2012 about the history of reform at Chicago Vocational in response to an earlier piece by Bey.
CVS was the first high school that joined the Small Schools Workshop back in the early 1990s. With nearly 4,000 students at that time, teachers and

State school chief responds to US DOE plans to withhold $10 million in Race to the Top funds

Here is a statement from State School Superintendent Dr. John Barge on the U.S. Education Department initiating procedures to withhold $9.9 milllion from Georgia's Race to the Top grant over state delays in putting a teacher evaluation program in place. You can read the U.S. DOE letter notifying the state of its intentions here.
All along, state folks said the Race to the Top timeline was daunting, but that they could and would meet it. That is apparently not the case with the teacher evaluation overhaul, which was tested last year and found wanting by many teachers.  Based on the feedback, there clearly was a need for more time to figure out this new system. But that extra time could come at a price.
In a letter today to Gov. Nathan Deal, the feds outline what Georgia promised and the risk in failing to deliver on time, saying, "In order to avoid withholding, the State must provide a plan and evidence, including sufficient legal authority, if necessary, to implement the full scope of the

HSLDA’s Michael Farris Has a Conversation with David Coleman

David Coleman, chief architect of the Common Core ELA standards and now President of theCollege Board has been reaching out to conservatives and Christians to encourage them to support the Common Core.  He recently contacted Michael Farris, the founder of the Home School Legal Defense Association.  Farris, in a email to his members (which my wife and I received yesterday as we’ve been members of HSLDA for years), discussed a recent phone conversation with Coleman.
    Dear HSLDA members and friend,
David Coleman, president of the College Board, is the acknowledged principal leader of the effort to create and implement the Common Core. And he wanted to talk with me about Home School Legal Defense Association’s position. I was very willing. We spent about an hour together on the phone. The conversation was very cordial. Both of us showed that we truly listened to and heard the other person’s position. And both of us stood strongly on our principles and core positions. I was really glad that we talked. His initial presentation walked me through several features of the Common Core. From a pedagogical perspective, there are clearly some good ideas contained in it. When it came time for me to respond, I began with a story. I once testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee when Senator Joseph Biden was chairing a hearing on a Supreme Court nominee. Before began, Biden asked me, “I have a question for you. Is it your idea to force everyone to homeschool?” I told Senator Biden that such an idea would be anathema to HSLDA and to me. We simply want to protect the right to choose homeschooling for those who wish to pursue it.
I told Mr. Coleman that the point of the story was this: Just because you have a good idea (homeschooling in my case, Common Core in his case), it doesn’t mean that it is appropriate

PAA affiliate MecklenburgACTS.org joined several thousand other activists for the final “Moral Monday” protest against the broad range of ALEC-driven legislation enacted in the just-concluded session of North Carolina’s legislature.
In a sweeping series of bills, state legislators lowered taxes on corporations and wealthy residents, while cutting education, health care, unemployment and a wide range of other programs. They also took aim at many basic rights, enacting one of the nation’s most stringent set of voting restrictions as well as measures designed to reduce access to abortions.
In education, legislators cut teachers and teacher assistant positions, abolished class size caps, reduced the number of pre-K slots, and started the state’s first private school voucher program. They also eliminated career status for teachers and cut added pay for masters’ degrees. North Carolina teachers, who have not seen a raise in years, are currently 48th in the nation in pay. A recent study showed they have lost more ground than teachers in any other state since 2008.
