What A Time To Be Alive [The Secret Sauce]

June 20, 2015 -- ATLANTA -- Drake makes a surprise appearance Future at Birthday Bash 20. (Akili-Casundria Ramsess/Special to the AJC)

For those of you who missed it, I had two separate, equally potent interviews with both the Wall Street Journal and Slate. I didn’t expect them to come out in the same week, but here’s a couple of excerpts. First, I was asked to debate / converse with National Center for Teaching Quality’s Kate Walsh and The New Teacher Project’s Daniel Weisberg. I have little respect for Walsh’s rep because it behooves her to see this country’s teachers as failing. She practically speaks herself into necessity. I barely knew Weisberg, but, even in places where we merged, I still couldn’t shake off the feeling that he’s compartmentalizing the job in all the wrong ways. Here’s my excerpt:
“Teacher prep in pedagogy is critical in this discussion. It is less about “rigor,” but about the ways in which we connect what new teachers are learning in their colleges of education and what’s happening at their own school. Teachers often say they’re not ready for a particular challenge not because they don’t know the material, but because schools are different from building to building, staff to staff,

STEVE JOBS WIDOW FUNDS $50 MILLION XQ: THE SUPER SCHOOL PROJECT

Lauren Powell Jobs.jpg

Does Steve Jobs widow Lauren Powell Jobs really need to spend $50 million to reinvent our public schools or do we just have to eliminate the endemic corruption of public education that puts corporate profit and gimmickry ahead of tried and true pedogogic methods from the past that have systematically been removed or sabotaged in order to keep poor students of color in their place with a non-public education system expressedly designed to accomplish this regrettable goal.

One need only look at an LAUSD of the 1950s and 1960s to find the successful model of academic and trade oriented public education that was subsequently systematically dismantled. So now, rather than address what was done to create the dropout failure factories that the vast majority of LAUSD schools have become, we are told to concentrate on the effects of this programmed failure, as if to do so will somehow make a better public education system.

While smaller classes might be nice, successful LAUSD public schools in the past and many public schools around the world today have large class sizes. This in and of itself is not the problem. Rather, the problem is the lack of homogeneity of the 40 students sitting in the class that have consistently been socially promoted without the requisite prior grade-level standards necessary to be engaged no matter how many students are in the class.

Referring to teachers teaching as "droning lectures" or attacking "dry textbooks" uses pejorative language to cover up the real impediment to student learning: The vast majority of students have been purposefully socially promoted STEVE JOBS WIDOW FUNDS $50 MILLION XQ: THE SUPER SCHOOL PROJECT - Perdaily.com:

Hillary's Education Plan

So, the Clinton campaign is starting to feel a little stress. This was in an e-mail from Robby Mook, the campaign manager:

Friend --

The Republican candidates for president are all over the place, but they do agree on one thing: They know that Hillary would be the strongest Democratic candidate, so they’ll say, do, and spend whatever it takes to bring down this campaign.

Karl Rove’s super PAC just released a vicious attack ad that spreads lies about Hillary’s emails, and they’re putting it out in New Hampshire. They know the polls are tight there, and that this is their best play to try to make sure they don’t have to face Hillary in the general election.

And this evening, the twitterverse is afraid that the NEA is going to make an early endorsement for Clinton. So here's the question again-- is Clinton a candidate that those of us who support public education can live with?

There are plenty of things to discuss, but let's focus, for a second, on Hillary believes that every child, no matter his or her race, income, or ZIP code, should be guaranteed a high-quality education.

That could mean any damn thing. It could mean that she supports building charter schools on every corner and shipping every poor child out of her own neighborhood to attend them. And it doesn't

Why is Washington State Attorney General Robert Ferguson sticking his neck out for charter schools?

In politics, actions are everything. That’s why it’s especially interesting Attorney General Bob Ferguson has decided to defend charter schools AFTER they were ruled unconstitutional by the Washington State Supreme Court.
Here’s the twist: before the Supreme Court made their surprise ruling, many opponents of the charter school Initiative 1240 predicted the law was unconstitutional. The basis of their argument was that charters did not qualify as “common schools” because they weren’t under the supervision of an elected body. Because these schools were not common, they should not have access to public funds.
Currently the Washington State Legislature is being held in contempt by the Supreme Court for not fully funding public education in the state of Washington. This was just as true in 2012, when the voters narrowly approved Initiative 1240.
After Initiative 1240 squeaked to victory with 50.69% of the vote, both the Superintendent of Public Instruction, Randy Dorn, and the newly elected Attorney General, Bob Ferguson, decided not to challenge its constitutional standing.
This voter approved initiative opened the gates for public education funding to be channeled to private organizations without public oversight — essentially denying even Why is Washington State Attorney General Robert Ferguson sticking his neck out for charter schools? | Seattle Education:
