Group Files Department of Education Complaint on UVa’s ‘Warning’

Teresa SullivanTeresa Sullivan overcame the University of Virginia’s attempt to fire her as president.
RICHMOND, Va. — A nonprofit group representing trustees and alumni from colleges around the country is seeking an investigation by the U.S. Department of Education into an accreditation agency’s decision to put the University of Virginia on warning for its failed attempt to fire its president last summer.
The American Council of Trustees and Alumni contends the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools’ Commission on Colleges overstepped its role as an accrediting agency and had no basis for the warning it issued over the school’s messy bid to oust Teresa Sullivan, its first woman president.
“We believe there is substantial reason to believe that the accreditor has inappropriately become involved in a power struggle between the president, faculty, and the board of trustees and urge you to investigate,” Anne D. Neal, president of the American Council of Trustees and Alumni, wrote to Education Secretary Arne Duncan and

Reliving the Black Campus Movement with Dr. Ibram Rogers

Black CampusDr. Ibram H. Rogers says he is “serious and passionate about using the lessons of the past to strive for a better present and future as it relates to race relations on campus.”
In the award-winning book, The Black Campus Movement: Black Students and the Racial Reconstitution of Higher Education, 1965-1972, Dr. Ibram H. Rogers documents
the groundbreaking impact that African-American students had on U.S. college and university campuses through their activism. By demanding and protesting for Black studies, Black cultural centers, Black faculty members and respectful treatment, Black students challenged both historically White and historically Black institutions and inspired the ideals that American colleges and universities today strive for as they pursue 21st century

School Tech Connect: Get To Aurora. Then Get To Springfield

School Tech Connect: Get To Aurora. Then Get To Springfield:

Get To Aurora. Then Get To Springfield

It's going to be a busy couple of days... These are things you should be attending, if you live in Illinois and you're a teacher:

Jobs For Justice Town Hall  (Pension Discussion)

Town Hall Pension Forum
When:  Wednesday January 2nd, 6:30-8:30 p.m.
Where:  East Aurora High School (Auditorium)
500 Tomcat Ln., Aurora, IL  60505
Ample parking–enter through Door 5

This event will feature the long-awaited reunion of pension-buster Elaine Nekritz and longtime public servant/noted blogger Fred Klonsky.  I will be filming. I will also be driving out there, so stay off the sidewalks.

Then, on to Springfield for the We Are One rallies/lobbying sessions on January 3 and 4.
You probably work with colleagues who will have a hundred reasons whey they couldn't make it to the rallies; it is your job to let them know you can't do all the heavy lifting by yourself.

Here's the general outline of the day. The IFT and AFT are both using this schedule; Buses from both groups  are going to IEA headquarters.
Anyway, the two large teacher unions aren't making it a cakewalk to join in the festivities; you have to do a little clicking around. And God forbid you know the names of other people living in the same representative/legislative districts.

If you're in the IFT, look here. In order to get a spot on a bus, you have to call your regional office. The list of those is here.

If you're in the IEA, look here. You also have to contact your regional office to get a spot on the bus. That list is here

On both days, buses head back home at around 4 PM; however, if you're a labor junkie, you'll be staying overnight. The venue for the all-important review-of-the-day-over-beverages will be announced later.

I don't know if Tom Cross is going to be in town--- I doubt it--- but if anyone gets to meet with him, he likes to go on and on about how people are living longer now and how it's just crazy about how long they're living and it's just so gall-darned expensive. Stop him from babbling. Life expectancy is figured in every certified state payment and always has been. Life expectancy has nothing to do with the state not making annual contributions year after year after year.

Peg with Pen: Children are NOT Numbers: National Opt Out Day, January 7th:

Children are NOT Numbers: National Opt Out Day, January 7th

Teachers, as you plan how to resist corporate education reform and rebuild public schools on National Opt Out Day (Jan.7th)  - or any day for that matter - here is one way to do it - do not allow others to refer to children based on their test scores. Children cannot be called "UnSats" or "Partials" or any other label attached to a number.

It is beyond disrespectful and allows teachers to become removed from the actions they are taking, therefore, they/teachers are less likely to wake up to the pain and suffering inflicted on these children from such abusive top down mandates. If children are numbers, rather than individuals with talents, personalities, ideas, heart, pain, and joy, it becomes much easier for corporate education reformers to move forward efficiently with their plan to profit off of these children as they are tallied, divided up and scattered randomly within communities.

When the community reads about the "failing" schools and the

Twelve lessons we learned from New York City’s schools in 2012 | GothamSchools: Twelve lessons we learned from New York City’s schools in 2012 by Philissa Cramer 2-12 Jan. 1, 2012, dawned just as 2013 will tomorrow: with the city at odds with the UFT over teacher evaluations, under the threat of a bus strike, and in the process of closing down dozens of schools. But just because the city’s education news sometimes seems like it’s on a loop doesn’t mean we can’t learn from it. My 2012 @tomwhitby « My Island View: My 2012 @tomwhitby by tomwhitby It has come to that time of year that we all sit back and reflect on what went on in our lives over the last 365 days.
