John Merrow has taken an unusual step for a journalist. He has written a blog post that attempts to marginalize one of the central figures of our national discourse on education. The post is entitled "Do We Need More Heroes," and in it, he compares Diane Ravitch to far-right Senator Ted Cruz. He goes even farther, in characterizing those of us who admire Diane Ravitch:

 I am pretty certain that the same people who idolize Ted Cruz or Diane Ravitch are equally vehement in their disdain for anyone who dares to disagree with their hero (and them).  These people inhabit a comic book world without ambiguity where heroes require villains.  Our society makes it easy to live in a black-and-white world without nuances-you can watch either Fox or MSNBC, but not both!

He does not explain who "these people" are. But since I would count Diane Ravitch as one of my heroes, I guess I must be among these zealots. So I felt compelled to respond:

Whoever controls the narrative of public education controls the public perception of the issue.

On TV we have Bill Gates, Michelle Rhee, Arne Duncan, and Waiting for Superman talking about failing schools, low standards, common core, China, and teacher’s unions but rarely do they ever talk about students.

Who is going to tell the story of public education? Is it going to be the corporate-education reformers who haven’t spent a day teaching in their entire lives or is it going to be the students, teachers, and parents who live the realities of these policies everyday in the classroom?

To address this I took last semester off of school to make a documentary that shows the human side of the debate. Nothing is more bureaucratic than education and with the emphasis on test scores it’s easy to forget the human impact that education policies have. By telling the stories of how testing has directly affected students, teachers, and parents those removed from the education sphere are given a window into the realities of what’s happening in classrooms all over the country and students struggling in school feel connected to each other and empowered to use their voices to change the education system.

This developed when the St Helena School Board wanted to include middle school grades in their school system to give parents a "choice" to leave the F rated RSD run Middle school in St Helena. The argument Jindal's lawyers used in court is that the addition of that "choice" for parents may adversely affect desegregation efforts. Now Hammatt points out, Jindal has bought a 500k media campaign to lambast the US Department of Justice for filing a suit to require the state to provide information about how Jindal's voucher program may affect desegregation agreements in some parishes.Jindal is feigning self righteous anger that the Justice Dept. has even raised the deseg. issue. This smells like

two Bammy Awards on Saturday, September 21st, in Washington DC.

Garfield High School history teacher Jesse Hagopian was named “Secondary School Teacher of the Year” on Saturday by the Academy of Education Arts and Sciences International at a black-tie gala in the nation’s capital. In addition to this “Bammy” Award—the “Grammys for teachers”—the academy also presented Mr. Hagopian with a Special Achievement Bammy.

The annual Bammy awards recognize educators from across the education field: teachers, principals, librarians, nurses, school-board members, superintendents, and others.

Hagopian knew he was one of five finalists nominated in the secondary school category, but he had no idea the academy had decided to give him another Bammy as well. “They had just presented a Special Achievement Bammy to Sandy Hook Elementary School, and all of us in the audience were numb as we thought about the tragedy that school had gone through,” Jesse said afterwards. “And then, out of nowhere, I hear my name being
