Sharing is the essence of digital creativity, but its enemies want to brainwash grade-schoolers with their commercial interests
In kindergarten, we teach children to share. By second grade – if people who bring you songs and pixie dust have their way – we’ll amend that in a major way.
Hollywood and the recording industry (aka the Copyright Cartel) are leading the charge to create grade school lessons that – at least, in their draft form, as published by Wired – have a no-compromise message: if someone else created it, you need permission to use it.
Sounds wonderful, until you think about how creativity actually works. And never mind that the law, already tipped in favor of copyright holders, doesn’t hold such an absolutist position.
It’s no surprise to learn that America’s biggest internet service providers – let’s call them the Telecom Cartel, since that’s what they’ve become – are part of this propaganda scheme. It’s sad to learn, however, that the California School Library Association has climbed aboard; the organization helped produce the lessons that, thankfully, are still only in draft form. But they are likely to reach California classrooms later this school year and, presumably, other parts of the

Teacherpreneuring

I haven’t been quite sure how to write about this, but I’m featured in a new book that came out last month. Teacherpreneurs: Innovative Teachers Who Lead But Don’t Leave advocates for a very attainable vision for the teaching profession.  Barnett, Ann, and Alan do a masterful job of capturing the work of seven brilliant and inspirational teachers who are leaders in their school and communities.  I’m thrown in as well. It’s well worth the read, but more importantly, it’s worth sharing with others, be them powers that be or lay people with strong opinions on education.  Here’s a nice little teaser video that captures the main arguments:

Also, I did a little teacherpreneuring of my own last week, traveling down to DC for an Alliance for Excellent Education Project 24 webinar on Data Driven Decision making.  My presentation is about how not to use data to make decisions.  You can watch it here, and click on my name to jump to my presentation.  The questions were interesting and are worth watching.

NYC Educator: Megalomayorac Bloomberg:

Megalomayorac Bloomberg

I can't find this on the net, but people keep telling me they saw Bloomberg on TV saying that the rash of overcrowded classes is a good thing. Apparently, the Emperor sees this as a sign that people can't wait to patronize our schools. Of course, this doesn't include Mayor Moneybags, who sent his kid to private schools. It doesn't include reformy folk like Joel Klein, who did the same.

Here's the thing--Mayor Bloomberg says he's doing a great job when test scores, the only thing he cares about, go up. When they're proven to be inflated and stay the same, he says the same. And this year, when they introduced the untested Common Core standards and scores plummeted, he said the same. Accountability is a concept that applies only to unionized teachers and whatever Bloomberg does is great. In fact, he's got Howard Wolfson on the city payroll, and much of his job entails telling people that.

But high class sizes are not, in fact, a good thing. They don't benefit kids and they make it even more difficult for teachers to do what is becoming a very, very tough job. In fact, it's Bloomberg's job to find space for kids in public schools and he's failed miserably, despite taking maybe a billion dollars from the CFE lawsuit to reduce class sizes. It's a ridiculous argument to say we have a lot of kids who want to go to school. Of course we do, in the largest school district in the country. If Mayor Bloomberg were less focused on

Gordon Wilder: Why the Obsession with Test Scores?
Reader Gordon Wilder wonders why we lost sight of the purpose of education: “My view: People have forgotten what real education is about, the search for ultimate values: good, truth, beauty. A Teacher’s Advice to Governors
Some governors and legislatures look on Teach for America as a way to save money, because most leave after two or three years at the bottom of the salary structure and never collect a pension. Jeff Bryant locates Reign of Error within the context of a coming “education spring,” a growing grassroots rebellion against a failing corporate reform movement.
