7/29/2011 09:52:18 PM PDT - Most people would relish the chance to be called president -- especially the nation's second-largest teachers union, representing some 40,000 educators, substitutes and counselors.

But Warren Fletcher, newly elected to head United Teachers Los Angeles, prefers to keep the title he's used for the last 28 years.

His analytical and often unemotional way of doing business has already earned him a reputation with some for being disconnected and indifferent.

We are in Washington to Save Our Schools and We Want Answers! - Living in Dialogue - Education Week Teacher

We are in Washington to Save Our Schools and We Want Answers!

For me, the journey to today's Save Our Schools March started when I wrote an open letter to President Obamaraising serious questions about where we are headed with education reform in America. Those questions have still not been answered.

Yesterday I had a chance to ask Arne Duncan a question, after his "Working Toward 'Wow'" speech. What I asked him was this:

I worked in high poverty schools in Oakland for 24 years. The turnover rate for our interns is 75% after three years. Your proposal for the reauthorization of ESEA continues to label the bottom 10% of our schools as failures. Under these circumstances, who will choose to teach in these high poverty schools? Doesn't this contribute to the crisis in our profession?

    Though Secretary Duncan responded, I

Sooner or later, a reluctant Congress is going to have to do something about replacing No Child Left Behind. If senators and representatives will listen, they’ll learn why Education Secretary Arne Duncan’s “Race to the Top” initiative is a really bad idea, and why thoughtful educators think politicians, business leaders and wealthy philanthropists are bulls in the education china shop.

Back in the 1980′s, corporate America, listening to privatizer Milton Friedman, came storming into the shop, not

    The Save Our Schools March

I already wrote a bit personally about why I’m marching today, but as I get ready to head over to the elipse to join with thousands of my fellow teachers and our allies, I thought it was worth publishing what is bringing a very diverse coalition of people together in order to try to better the lives of children and young adults across the country:

    The SOS March Guiding Principals

For the future of our children, we demand:

Equitable funding for all public school communities

    • Equitable funding across all public schools and school systems
    • Full public funding of family and community support services
    • Full funding for 21st century school and neighborhood libraries

Diane Ravitch speaks at SOS pre-march conference
It seems like I've been doing this most of my adult life. Coming to D.C. to march around the White House has almost become a yearly ritual, starting with the Civil Rights Movement, the struggle to end the war in Vietnam and the many wars since, and now -- in some ways a continuation of those great movements -- the struggle to save and transform our public school system.

It's hot today in D.C. -- real hot. So to draw inspiration and fire myself up for 5 hours in the sun and on the hot city streets, I'm thinking of those strik

    Ouch!

Check out all the nicely packed narratives in the embedded info-graphic over at Progress Illinois. You'd have to spend a lot of time unpacking the grade-level narrative, the international comparison narrative, the impossibility of firing a teacher because of unions narrative. It's shock-doctrine, and they've not even bothered to re-word it. And this is the progressive media.

    A Student Voice: Emma

The following is a guest post by Emma Gore, a rising 9th grader. She’d like to add her voice to the chorus of folks wanting to save our schools from the mediocrity of centering on standardized testing rather than a real education. Please respond.

    Feels like a Disney Movie

When I was four, I was incredibly enthusiastic to learn and be a part of the schooling process I had heard so much about. When I walked through the kindergarten doors, the handle higher than my head, I knew I was going to change, however unsure how. The people around me, the world, it was all going to change because we were going learn something of substance and value. Simply the fact that we were being educated meant that

Who's Terrified? Debt Ceiling Fiasco and Student Loans

It's politics as usual, and like many of you, I am underemployed, living with my in-laws, and absolutely furiouswith this bullshit in D.C. I want to play an active role in this country. I want to be engaged politically, and know it makes a f---ing difference. I am fighting tooth and nail, and can no longer afford to buy my own f---ing groceries, and these nitwits are playing with fire! Hey, a---holes, people OUT HERE ARE SUFFERING, and yet you march along like a bunch of nitwits.

I know the political and social reasons why this is happening. Neoliberalism is bringing the whole f--ing thing
