As you know I do a lot of blogging, albeit not only on education.

There is a national bloggers (and others) conference each summer. The first was in Las Vegas in 2006 and then (and the next year) was called Yearly Kos. Since 2008 it has been called Netroots Nation. I went to the first four, leading panels the first three, the first two years on education, the third on young people in politics. The fourth year I simply attended to I could go to other panels. Among my panelists on education were then Governor Tom Vilsack of Iowa, then Commissioner of Education of Nebraska Doug Christensen, Jamie Vollmer, Marion Brady, and Prof. Sherman Dorn.

Last year I did not go, because the event conflicted with my volunteering at a free medical-dental clinic in Wise, Virginia, in Appalachia, co-sponsored by Stan Brock's Remote Area Medical and the Virginia Dental

More than 3000 miles separate English teacher Erin Gruwell at Wilson High School in Long Beach (CA) in the film “Freedom Writers” from middle school math teacher Roland Pryzbylewski (Mr. P.) in Baltimore (MD) in HBO’s “The Wire.” Based upon an actual novice white teacher, the celluloid Gruwell, played by Hillary Swank, spurs her class to overcome poverty, gang banging, and utter pessimism about their future to write in their journals and eventually go to college. Mr. P, also a novice white teacher, played by Jim True-Frost, tries hard to get his 8th graders, to learn fractions, long division, and probability and stay out of selling drugs. Mr. P, however, is a fictitious character.

It's kind of heartbreaking what's happened to journalism in these parts. You have to wade through oceans of crap to get anywhere, and even then you can't be too sure what you're looking at. But in America today, we get very selective news. Is there war in Afghanistan and Iraq? I mean, I don't see it on TV, so how can it really be happening?

Education news was looking up for a while. I mean, sure, the Post prints the same one-sided crap all the time, there's a definite slant at the Daily News editorial page, but at least there are all these blogs, where real people give it to you firsthand. Gotham Schools was a really exciting prospect. I mean, for the busy blogger, you could find all the headlines every morning rather than combing the web every day. Sure, every piece of crap one-paragraph "story" from the Post got a link, and some things seemed to escape them, but there it

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker declared war on teachers and other public sector workers on Friday, Feb. 11. Most of us activists knew when the Republicans swept both chambers of the state Legislature and the governorship that things would get bad, but few dreamt they’d get this bad, this fast.

Walker claimed his “budget repair” bill was needed to fill a $137 million shortfall in the state budget, and blamed the crisis on excessive pension and health insurance benefits for public employees. His solution: a frontal attack on the right to organize. His 144-page bill bans all unions in the state university system, at the University of Wisconsin-Madison hospital, and among state childcare workers. It essentially eliminates collective bargaining rights for all other public sector unions, requires that unions have recertification votes annually, and prohibits collecting union dues through payroll deduction. Within 30 minutes of Walker’s announcement, the right-wing Club for Growth aired TV commercials in Wisconsin’s major media markets. The message: Public employees are the “haves” and others in the state are the “have-nots.”

My goal in this post is to explain why it is vitally important in the current policy debate, that we pay careful attention to how child poverty is measured and what is gained and lost by choosing different versions of poverty measures as we evaluate education systems, schools and policy alternatives.

There is a great deal of ignorance and in some cases belligerent denial about persistent problems with using excessively crude measures to characterize the family backgrounds of children, specifically measuring degrees of economic disadvantage.
