Dec. 5: Oakland Superintendent Tony Smith's vision of "full-service community schools" is taking shape on some campuses, thanks to a school-based health center initiative that has picked up steam since 2008.

Oakland Unified's 12th health center opened recently at Skyline High School. The Native American Health Center will operate services at the clinic, which includes two medical exam rooms, a laboratory and three confidential consultation rooms. The renovations were funded by a 2006 school bond measure and seed money from a 2008 Kaiser Permanente donation. Atlantic Philanthropies also donated millions to the districtwide effort.

BALTIMORE -- Darius Riley displays the concentration of a tightrope walker as he fastens his eyes on the lined paper in front of him and grips his No. 2 yellow pencil down to its point to make his most perfect curly letters.

"I would rather do it in print because it is faster," Darius, a fifth-grader at Highlandtown Elementary School near Patterson Park, said of his cursive writing. Even his typing would probably be quicker, he says.

Darius may be in the last generation of students to be taught cursive as states begin dropping the subject in favor of spending time on mastering math, science and other skills.

Cursive is not included in the so-called common core standards, which will govern teaching and lesson plans in 46 states beginning next year, leaving states free to shift away from a subject taught for centuries. Hawaii and Indiana

LAUSD had a meeting today at Dorsey High School to roll out the Public School Choice Program for the parents and community members present. I went to the meeting, because my own analysis of this program, which I covered at perdailyclearly showed that this was just more of the same recycled and renamed vacuous school reform rhetoric from the past, e.g.LEARN, that has no chance of bring about any positive change to communities of color and poverty in LAUSD.

I decided to pass it along to my state representative, my highly reformy state senator, my charter-happy liberal Democratic congresswoman, for whom I campaigned fiercely in 1998--and my senators, one of whom can be seen hiding in a copy room here. After reading Fred's last post, I feel like sending it to the leadership of NEA, which as far as I'm concerned has reached a nadir wholly unimaginable even just four years ago. United Opt Out National has declared January 7th as National Opt Out Day. On this day we are encouraging Occupy movements everywhere to endorse this action. We are asking parents, students and community members to write letters/postcards to their school districts stating how they will OPT OUT. We have created a postcard that allows for multiple ways to opt out and it can be purchased in bulk to share. Of course, the slam dunk is opting out of the state test as this will shut down corporate education reform.
