    Full disclosure. I know Billy Beane, the inspiration for Moneyball.

    In another world I was part of some three decades ago as an athletic trainer in professional baseball, I was there when Beane arrived as a young kid from a San Diego high school. He didn’t play long in the major leagues, but then again, the vast majority of players who sign professional contracts do not. Making it to there – even for a day – is no small feat. Smart guy, Beane. He could have gone to Stanford and might have been John Elway’s replacement. We’ll never know what might have been, but even Beane now says of his 1980 decision to take the New York Mets’ cash instead of going to Stanford was the “only decision he would ever make in his life about money.”

    Hmmmmm.

    React & Act: How do we close the Latino learning gap?

    Latino students in California – nearly 1.3 million of them English learners – are struggling to achieve academic success at the same level as their white peers. In “State has one of nation’s highest gaps in Hispanic-white reading proficiency,” Sarah Garland reports that only 12 percent of Hispanic fourth-graders in California tested proficient in reading in 2009. Nonprofits, government agencies and parents have all launched campaigns over the years to close the learning gap, but little progress has been made.

    To better understand the roots of the Latino learning gap and explore potential solutions, we spoke with Patricia Gándara, co-director of The Civil Rights Project at UCLA and an expert on the Latino achievement gap.

    California Watch: Does the Latino learning gap extend beyond the classroom? Just how pervasive of a problem is this?

    Oh poor little Eva Moskowitz. I feel so sorry for her. I am sure right now she is pouting, whining, wondering why no one, except her emasculated husband Eric Grannis loves or cares for her.

    Anna Phillips, since she is now in the employ of the New York Times and actually doing reporting and not aggregating, reported this past Wednesday, October 19, that Harlem Success Academy 3 has lost more than a third of its staff to resignation in the last several months. In fact, the attrition rates as reported by Anna at HSA 1 and 2 is about 19 percent since this past June.

    When most people think of a “school”, particularly a school for young people, the image of kids sitting behind desks with a teacher at the front leading the class (as the “sage on the stage” as they say) generally comes to mind. Somewhere down the hall from this and other classrooms is an “office” including administrative staff and particularly the school principal who runs the school, including giving marching orders to and evaluating the teachers, and dealing with student disciplinary issues that are referred to them by the teachers.
