      Dear Kelly,

      Congratulations on being appointed to complete the term of Harry Osterman in Illinois' 14 Legislative District. You have said that you will run for election in March 2012. Let me suggest one thing: people will make assumptions about your competence based on little things, like their ability to contact you. Currently, I cannot find any contact information for you in all the usual places. I realize you have only been in office a week, but still, it's been a week, and you were appointed over a month ago. Are you on Twitter?

      Last week I heard about a colleague who received a callback from Deb Mell from the floor of the House. I was green with envy.

      Today's teacher can no longer afford just to be in the classroom and trust that all will be well in 'teacher world'. Teachers are not politicians I know, and had they liked policy they probably would have never been a teacher, yet the times call for them to become political, period. In fact, while we teachers have been busy teaching the nation's children, Bill and Melida Gates have been busy training pretend teacher lobbyists to help change education policy to suit their 'mission'. In this week's NYT's article by Sam Dillon entitled, Behind Grass-Roots School Advocacy, Bill Gates I read the following:

      And the one that really ticks me off, “You all have it easy.” HA!

      What people don’t realize is that after spending 177 days, (doesn’t seem like much does it), with other people’s children, you are ready to take a year off, not just two to three months. We are drained, physically and emotionally. When you are all things to 25-30+ students, day in and day out, you are wiped out. If teachers did not get this break, we might go “ teachal”.       “We Should Never Privatize Public Safety”

      Florida’s legislature just passed a budget that will privatize the correctional services of 18 counties, basically 20% of its prison population. Though the decision has been criticized by both side of the aisle (the quote I used for the title comes from a Republican legislator, Mike Fasano), and despite the fact that private prisons in Florida, as elsewhere, have a long history of abuse and failure to perform up to contract, the deal went through. Senator Fasano described the claims of cost-savings touted by proponents, including budget chief JD Alexander, as “unconvincing and undocumented.” In fact, Alexander at one point even said he himself was not convinced of the savings, but wanted to privatize a huge portion of the state system as part of an “experiment.”

      This is unrestrained Republican ideology in its most logical iteration. Governor Ric Scott and many Republicans in the state legislature, especially JD Alexander, received huge contributions from the GEO Group in campaign
