Chicago’s next Schools CEO Jean-Claude Brizard was named in two federal lawsuits during his three years as superintendent of the Rochester, NY school district, including one that accused Mayor-elect Rahm Emanuel’s controversial pick of age discrimination.

Both lawsuits were filed last July.

The first accuses Brizard of firing Marilynn Patterson Grant, Rochester’s former deputy superintendent for teaching and learning, “without cause” last year after making several derogatory comments about her age.

Dillon Lynch, an autistic 7-year-old from the Bronx, is too traumatized to talk about being handcuffed following an incident at school.

An autistic 7-year-old was hauled out of a Bronx public school in metal handcuffs last year - the second case of a cuffed youngster to come to light this week.

Mom Siobhan Lynch told the Daily News about her second-grader's harsh punishment after reading about another 7-year-old special education student getting cuffed at a Queens school on April 13.

Kathy Carroll says she was fired for blowing the whistle on problems in the state Commission on Teacher Credentialing that could jeopardize kids – and she's fighting to get her job back.

"A government agency should be held accountable," she said of her whistle-blowing. "If it has made mistakes or isn't doing things per statute, the public has a right to know."

Carroll was fired during a probe of the teacher credentialing commission in which she was assisting officials of the state auditor, Elaine Howle, who now calls the board one of the "worst run" that she ever has investigated.

Documents show there are two sides to Carroll's firing, with a showdown brewing in the Stat

Teachers, staff, and students at GarnerMiddle Schoolhave created a new language of sorts, one worthy of research and further study. Noted etymologist Dr. Rand Lichtenstein of Harvard has recently published his research on the language in the April issue of the Modern Language Review.

Lichtenstein studied the school over an eight-week period, after it had come to light that outside members of the public and parents were unable to communicate effectively with those associated with the school. “What I found was an ingenuous code these people had developed in order to survive in the educational environment that has arisen around them,” Lichtenstein said.

Lichtenstein said he noticed the strange language as soon as he entered the building and said “Hello” to the student aide on duty at the front desk.

The student responded by asking,

“Do you wish to

One thing that all seem to agree upon: if public education is going to be a viable solution for our students, change is inevitable.

Sue and I have been trying to figure out whether to drop the 2010 out of our blog title or not.

Neither of us ever thought that this blog would continue as long as it has or receive the attention that it has over the last two years.

I set up the blog as Seattle Education 2009 and Sue suggested 2010. I thought that the big push for ed reform in Seattle would be during 2009 and 2010 which was a correct assumption but also that it would be over one way or the other and we would both move on. As I stated in our original blog,

Our goal is to have an informed public on issues that affect us in Seattle as it relates to public school education.

That sounded simple enough. We and other parents knew that what was going on
