I'm off for a few days for the holidays. Given that some other states and districts are actively debating new rules limiting student-teacher contact via social media, I thought this prior post was worth another look.


Missouri recently passed a law to severely limit online interactions between teachers and their students on social networking sites. It quickly became known as Missouri’s “Facebook Law,” and the state’s teachers union filed suit to block the new regulations from taking effect. A state judge has since struck the laww down as unconstitutional. On Monday, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports, the state's lawmakers were debating repealing the law and replacing it with requirements for school-based policies.

Meanwhile in Southern California, a school district is being sued after an assistant football coach sent sexually explicit texts and photographs to a 13-year-old girl. The coach pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 113 days in

So opines E. J. Dionne in this Washington Post op ed this morning. He means that in a specific sense:

Obama is defending a tradition that sees government as an essential actor in the nation’s economy, a guarantor of fair rules of competition, a countervailing force against excessive private power, a check on the inequalities that capitalism can produce, and an instrument that can open opportunity for those born without great advantages.
Against this he poses the Republicans as extreme radicals: Rick Perry promising to make the national government "inconsequential" is but one example.

All of the Republicans tout this election as the most important in history, warning of the dangers Obama supposedly represents to kind of America they seem to think the people want, and which they advocate. The President counters, agreeing on the importance, as he noted in his speech in Osawatomie, Kansas:

“This is a make-or-break moment for the middle class, and for all those who are fighting to get into the middle class.”

More than any other word, “accountability” has become the keyword defining the past quarter-century in private and public sectors of life in America. Presidents, governors, and mayors say that they answer to voters. CEOs and top managers proudly display their accountability to their boards of trustees. Small and mid-size owners of companies know that they are accountable to their customers. Appointed leaders and bureaucrats point to the outcomes they must meet in their evaluations. Or pay the consequences. So let’s call these political, market, and bureaucratic forms of accountability.

Anyone in K-12 or higher education knows that accountability is (and has been for decades) the magic word that opens doors for aspiring leaders and shows the exit to low-performing employees. For these institutions,
